Cousins drive food truck around area
Troy cousins hop on food truck trend, serving all over area
CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. » Little Big Fatz Food Shack is rolling around the region for the summer season, serving food truck fare to hungry customers.
Cousins Albert Deeb and Mike Yamin of Troy started Little Big Fatz Food Shack last year when they decided to jump on the food truck trend.
“We’ve been in the restaurant business,” Yamin said, “and we just heard about the trend in food trucks, how it’s kind of hip, and we figured we’d take a certain idea and take it on the road.” After securing a truck and deciding on a menu of American favorites including burgers, hot dogs, french fries and fish fry, Little Big Fatz Food Shack was ready to go.
The food truck made its debut feeding construction crews working on the site of Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady. Following that, Little Big Fatz Food Shack began booking events throughout the Capital Region, including weddings, graduations, birthdays and other celebrations.
“Really we’re finding it’s a lot of fun, and there’s a lot of business out there for a good food truck,” Yamin said of their experience so far.
“We’re kind of unique in what we do, because we’re one of the only food trucks that does fish fry,” Yamin said.
Customers are also fans of the truck’s sliders - served with caramelized onions much like the ones at longtime local familyowned burger joint Jack’s Drive In, where Deeb is the manager.
“Albert’s always had a flare for this kind of thing,” Yamin said of his cousin and co- owner. “So we said why don’t we take this on the road?”
Deeb added, “Taking fish fry and our kind of sliders of the road is a big deal. Nobody does it. Everybody does like the gourmet burgers and stuff like that -
these are old fashioned, old school.”
Little Big Fatz Food Shack can also change its menu to cater to different parties or events.
Next weekend Little Big Fatz Food Shack will be on site at S&S Farm Brewery, on Friday and Saturday at its 174 Middle Road location in Nassau.
This summer, the food truck can also be spotted at the free North Greenbush Summer Concert Series on Sundays in July and August.
Little Big Fatz Food Shack will be back once again at the Field of Horrors haunted attraction in Brunswick this fall, too.
The owners are aiming to add to the food truck schedule with more private gigs as well as public events in downtown Troy and Albany.
Their goal is simply to keep the business growing in the future, and someday operate multiple food trucks. Yamin said, “We want to take the concept and eventually have these all over the place.”
