DOG WASH & WALK: Come to East Greenbush Town Park on the morning of Saturday, May 12, from 9a.m. to noon to have your dog washed and walked for only $5. This event is being organized by East Greenbush Central School District students. All proceeds benefit Peppertree Rescue, a local animal shelter which finds homes for dogs in need. EAGLES OF NEW YORK: In partnership with NYS De- partment of Environmental Conservation, Peebles Island State Park will host a presentation on the Eagles of New York on Saturday, May 12, from 2:30p.m. – 4pm.. The presentation, led by DEC wildlife technician Scott VanArsdale, is geared towards older children and adults. Participants will learn about the history of DEC’s reintroduction program and the lives of eagles throughout the year. Scott will share some stories from his 25years of work with eagles. After the program, there will be a short moderate hike (about 1mile round-trip) to view an active eagle nest, weather permitting. Please bring binoculars if you have them. GEORGI PLANT SALE: The Georgi Plant Sale takes place on May 12from 9a.m. – noon. Members are granted early access at 8:30a.m. Vendors are invited at $20per space. Indoor spaces are limited and will be offered on a first come/ first serve basis. Outdoor locations are available as well. The sale will include items from the Georgi gardens, annuals, perennials, and hanging baskets. Donations of plants welcomed, drop off at Community Room on May 10-11. HAMFEST: To promote youth involvement with Amateur Radio, the East Greenbush Amateur Radio Association (EGARA) will offer free admission to its 15th annual “Hamfest” to all high school and college students who present their school ID at the event on Saturday, May 12. The Hamfest will run from 8a.m. to 1p.m. at the East Greenbush Fire Department, 68Philips Road. A Grand Prize of a dual-band VHF/UHF mobile ham radio system will be given away, and a First Prize of a tri-band portable radio will also be offered, along with other door prizes. LATIN CONFIRMATION: A Latin Confirmation according to the Old Rite will take place on May 12at 2p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 4163rd Street in Troy. This is only the third time that this rite will have been celebrated in the diocese of Albany since the liturgical reforms in the Catholic Church which occurred in the 1970s. Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger will preside. The public is invited to witness this sacrament in Latin, as it was offered for hundreds of years. MURDER AT OAKWOOD:
In 1870Oakwood Cemetery was rocked by a sensational murder and suicide involving one of Troy’s oldest families, the Vanderheydens. Troy and Lansingburgh residents were gripped with hysteria during the investigation. 148 years later, local historian Warren Broderick, dressed as County Coroner Thomas Hurley, will spare no details as he releases the official report of this tragic tale and leads the curious public to the scene of the shocking event and the shunned murderer’s secret burial place. Columbia County Soil and Water Conservation District invites you to Mud Creek Environmental Learning Center for a morning of birding during spring migration. From wrens to warblers, sparrows to swallows, a multitude of colorful and astonishing bird species are to be expected as they make their way north to their breeding grounds around Mud Creek and beyond.
