OAKWOOD CEMETERY: The public is cordially invited to Oakwood Cemetery at 9a.m. on Saturday, May 26, for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony. The historic three-ton Meneely bell in front of the Earl Chapel will be rung nine times to mark the start of the event. The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery and the Veterans of Lansingburgh will lay wreaths in honor of all deceased veterans. Michael Barrett will MC and Jim Pratt of the Veterans’ Miracle Center will speak. Nikki Osterhout will sing the national anthem. Representatives of the NYS 125th reenactors will fire a musket salute. Local Boy Scouts will place American flags on graves at the Soldiers’ Plot. There is no charge for this event. In case of heavy rain, the ceremony will be moved into the chapel.
THACHER NATURE CENTER: Vernal ponds are ephemeral wetlands that fill with water from winter and spring rains, and usually dry out by the end of summer. Explore a vernal pond that serves as an important breeding site for many obligate species, including the Yellow Spotted and Jefferson salamanders. KINDERHOOK MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: The Town of Kinderhook will be hosting its annual Memorial Day Parade in the Village of Kinderhook this year on Monday, May 28, starting at 10a.m. The parade will line up on the corners of Catskill View Drive & Berkshire Drive between 9a.m. - 9:30a.m. The parade will continue down Rte 9to the Kinderhook Village Square where there will be a Memorial Ceremony.

WELCOME PETER HOME: The Rensselaer County Historical Society recently acquired a historic 1840s watercolor portrait of Peter F. Baltimore, a prominent member of an important free black family who
came to Troy in the late 18th-early 19th century. Peter’s barbershop was a documented part of the local Underground Railroad system. RCHS is holding a “Welcome Peter Home!” community-wide reception on May 30to welcome home a rare portrait of one of Troy’s most prominent mid-19th-century citizens.
