Powers Park Concert Series kicks off Saturday
TROY, N.Y. » The annual Powers Park Concert Series is returning for its 15th season, with lots of entertainment in store for summer 2018.
The first event, featuring local act Soul Sky, is scheduled for 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday at Powers Park in Troy’s historic Lansingburgh neighborhood.
The free series will continue each Saturday throughout July and August with Back 40 Band on July 14, Rick Surrano & 1- 4-5 on July 21, The Refrigerators on July 28, Matt Mirabile Band on Aug. 4, Big Sky Country on Aug. 11, River Junction on Aug. 18 and returning band Emerald City as the finale on Aug. 25.
Each event typically attracts hundreds of attendees, sometimes thousands.
Last year, despite discontinued financial support from the city, the Powers Park Concert Series continued on thanks to donations from local businesses and residents. The effort was spearheaded by District 1 City Councilman Jim Gulli, who is glad to welcome music-lovers back to Powers Park for the 15th annual concert series. “The community comes together,” he said. “We put together these shows with some quality local music to bring people to the park, to build on our camaraderie and our community level.”
Gulli hinted that the series will feature some new surprises this season that people won’t want to miss.
“It’s just a great way to spend your Saturday night out and about,” Gulli said, adding that he’s excited to see the series grow. “We plan on taking it a little bigger each year for the people of Troy.”
All are invited to attend this weekend’s Soul Sky show, as well as all of the upcoming concerts in the 2018 Powers Park Concert Series. “The power is definitely going to be on up there at Powers Park, every Saturday,” Gulli said.
“We’re ready to rock and roll Saturday,” said Vito Ciccarelli of 6String Music Management.
Ciccarelli said his goal for the series this summer is to improve attendance from last year, when it was down a bit - and he’s hoping the 2018 lineup will help make that possible.
With newcomers like River Junction and Rick Surrano & 1- 4- 5 on the bill, along with longtime local favorites such as Emerald City - which Ciccarelli describes as “the best classic rock band ever to come out of this area” - he said this year’s scheduled lineup is diverse and mixed. “People can expect and overwhelming lineup.“
Each event is held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Powers Park.
Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the Park. Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at the events.
