RUN FOR THE ROSES 5K: Registrati­on is open for the 33rd Annual Run for the Roses 5K Foot Race on Sunday, August 12, at Grafton Lakes State Park. The event benefits Grafton Community Library, and includes a 2.5 Mile Nature Walk and Kids’ 1Mile Fun Run in addition to the USATF sanctioned 5K race. CARDBOARD BOAT RACING: Hudson Crossing Park presents its 14th Annual Cardboard Boat Races on Saturday, August 11, (rain date: Sunday, August 12) at the Fort Hardy Park beach on Route 29in Schuylervi­lle. This year’s theme is “Rock the Boat.” The first race launches at 1p.m. Admission is free for spectators. Entry fees start at $20per sailor with a $50per boat maximum. NAME THE OWL: The name of the game at Cheney Library in Hoosick Falls this summer is “Name Our Owl.” A wooden sculpture was donated to the Library by Andrew Tae Cowder. HISTORIC STEPHENTOW­N PHOTOS: Photograph­s of Stephentow­n from 1907and 1908are now on display at the Stephentow­n Post Office. These scenes have been printed from glass plate negatives that were donated to the Stephentow­n Historical Society by the Lebanon Valley Historical Society. The views include the Kinderhook Creek and Atwater Village section of Garfield. These historic images will also be part of a Spring 2019exhibi­t of local photograph­y at the Stephentow­n Heritage Center. Photograph­ers should plan to take their own interestin­g views and visions of Stephentow­n throughout the coming year with this exhibit in mind. CIVIL WAR WEEKEND: Tickets are now available for the Civil War Weekend, a fundraiser for The Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage, which will be held on August 11and 12at D.A. Using incongruou­s phrases combined with digitally altered drawings, she creates a curious, ambiguous ether for viewers to meander through. Brill encourages viewers to disassembl­e the pairings, and consider both what they see initially, and what can be extracted by separating the written and visual elements.
