TROY » Pause Gallery, the first retail tenant in the former Record building, is now open and offering art for everyday use.

The gallery first opened its doors on Sunday at Suite 106 of 501 Broadway in downtown Troy.

Following this soft opening, Pause Gallery will have a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. on Thursday and a weekend-loing grand opening ceremony with artists on site Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The new business is owned and operated by Albany couple Gail and Lou Snitkoff, who have been avid collectors of art and fine crafts and supporters of the creative community for most of their adult lives.

“Pause Gallery is an opportunity for us to present unique and beautiful objects, as well as works on paper in a warm and welcoming setting,” Gail said in a press release. “In doing so, we will broaden this community to include those in the Capital Region who appreciate of these works and who wish to acquire them.”

Over the past year, the Snitkoffs have identified more than 50 artists and craftspeople from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions working in a wide variety of handmade media, including watercolors, photography, art glass, ceramics, wood, and jewelry to present at Pause Gallery, with a particular focus on contempo-

porary American fine craft as well as some photography and painting. “We have chosen their work because it resonates with us visually, emotionally, and/ or spiritually, and because it is of exceptional quality regardless of the price point,” they said in the release. “There are currently no galleries in the region that duplicate the depth and breadth of the work that will be available at Pause Gallery.” Lou and Gail have dreamt of starting an art gallery for about a decade, it in their retirement years. Gail said they chose to open Pause Gallery in Troy, “because Troy is the arts center of the Capital District at this point, and we felt that the thriving creative community in match Troy for would what we be wanted a good to do.” The historical building, formerly home to The Record newspaper, has exactly the vibe that the owners wanted, Gail said, adding that the developer embraced their vision for Pause Gallery. On why they named the gallery Pause, Gail said, “In everybody’s really busy overcharged, over want digitalized people to come life, we in and pause and recognize the beauty that is around them.” For those who take a piece home with them, Gail hopes it can serve as a constant reminder to pause in their own lives dditionally, Pause Gallery wants to offer art at affordable price points for customers, with pieces starting at $20 each and a wide variety of items available for less than $100.

Looking ahead, Pause Gallery aims to increase its presence in the community and grow its network of artists, including local artists, Gail said. “We’d just like to really create community for this kind of work around here.”

Pause Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, with extended evening hours for the district’s monthly Troy Night Out events.
