CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. » Plug Power, a leading provider of alternative energy technology, is expanding in the Capital Region, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced recently.

The company is opening a new manufacturing facility in Clifton Park, where it will create 97 new jobs. The new location will support increased hydrogen and fuel cell production to meet industry demands while supporting New York’s commitment to cleaner and more efficient energy sources.

“Clean and renewable energy producers are critical in our efforts to combat climate change and ensure the sustainability of this planet,” Cuomo said. “Plug Power has been developing and manufacturing clean energy solutions in the Capital Region for more than 20 years, and their decision to expand in New York is a testament to the state’s strong business climate.”

Plug Power is investing nearly $ 2.8 million over five years to fit out the 38,400-square-foot facility, allowing the company to vertically integrate its hydrogen fuel cell manufacturing and encourage greater adoption of hydrogen as an alternative energy source. The facility will be used to manufacture Plug Power’s hydrogen fuel cell solutions for electric vehicle and material handling applications.

“As Plug Power continues to grow both its customer base and corporate family, opening the Clifton Park facility was an easy decision,” said Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh. “We’re confident that our technology solutions coupled with the proven ingenuity, deep pool of engineering talent and the unsurpassed work ethic of people in the Capital Region will make this expansion a great success.”

Advanced manufacturing is a key component of New York’s economy and its continued development has been sparked by state investments. Capitalizing on an educated workforce and collaborative research support, the state continues to encourage industry innovation. Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology and Innovation supports Centers for Advanced Technology and Centers of Excellence that foster industry-university collaboration, including several with a clean energy focus. These efforts are helping make significant strides toward Governor Cuomo’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and encouraging greater energy efficiency.

“Plug Power’s investment in the clean energy industry is helping to grow the innovative economy of the Tech Valley and create high-tech job opportunities for local residents,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. “This new manufacturing facility in Saratoga County will generate nearly 100 new jobs and continue to advance electric vehicle technology in New York State. The Capital Region is continuing to grow with tech companies like Plug Power choosing to invest and expand in the area.”

Empire State Development will provide nearly $640,000 in performance-based Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits.

“Strategic investments in advanced manufacturing and sustainable energy production are allowing companies to develop and manufacture new technologies,” said Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Howard Zemsky. “Plug Power’s expansion means more green collar jobs in the Capital Region, supporting the regional economy and New York State’s commitment to clean energy industries.”
