SAVING HEMLOCKS: One of the most important tree species in the northeast, hemlocks are under attack by the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). On Monday, September 10, from 1:30p.m. - 4p.m., Charlotte Malmborg of Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension’s New York State Hemlock Initiative (NYSHI), will provide an overview of HWA, as well as a new phenology monitoring program, which may help control the spread of HWA. The first part of this free training, from 1:30 p.m. -2:30p.m., will focus on correctly identifyin­g hemlock trees and hemlock woolly adelgid, management techniques and biocontrol opportunit­ies.The second part, from 2:30p.m. - 4 p.m., involves the phenology monitoring of HWA and a field component, so dress appropriat­ely. The training will occur at Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension of Columbia and Greene Counties’ Agroforest­ry Resource Center in Acra. The registrati­on deadline is September 7. MUSHROOM WALK: Sue Van Hook, local mycologist, will lead hikers into the woods at one of Rensselaer Land Trust’s forests or preserves on Sunday, September 30. Participan­ts will gather mushrooms during an hour interval, and then make their way over to another location to eat lunch (bring your own). Sue will demonstrat­e the process of identifyin­g the mushrooms collected and others that you have found using hand lens, spore prints, and available books. Bring a basket or bag with stiff sides, a field knife or trowel, and a hand lens if you have one along with any mushroom identifica­tion books you may have. Registrati­on fee $30/person. TROY AIDS WALK: The Troy Area United Ministries (TAUM) sponsors an AIDS 5K Walk fund-raising event for the Damien Center on Sunday afternoon, September 23. The event begins at the TAUM building, 392 2nd Street, Troy, with a light lunch at noon and a 1p.m. start for the walk. The walk is 5K north to downtown Troy and returning to the TAUM Center. This year the organizing committee is reaching out to individual­s and groups in the Troy area to join in the AIDS Walk by sponsoring a team or teams. Forms to enroll teams or friends in this event are available at taum.org. Prizes will be given to the team and to the individual with the highest sponsorshi­p. WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S: Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Each year, more than 500,000people come together in over 600 communitie­s to advance the fight against the disease. Participan­ts carry flowers representi­ng their connection to Alzheimer’s. FEDULLO- CATENA GOLF TOURNAMENT: St. Anne Institute, a nationally recognized residentia­l and community-based treatment (counseling) center, helping children and families across New York State will host its annual Fedullo-Catena Golf Tournament. This year the tournament will be held at the Shaker Ridge Country Club on September 24(tee time is at 12:30p.m.). The cost for golf is $215per player. UPPER HUDSON LIBRARY EXPEDITION: Did you know that your Upper Hudson Library card lets you borrow virtually anything from any library in Albany and Rensselaer counties? Become a “36-er” by going on the Upper Hudson Library Expedition, which opens the doors of every UHLS public library and gives you the chance to win prizes by visiting as many Upper Hudson libraries as possible. Open to explorers of all ages, this self-paced journey takes place from September 1 through November 30, with a “soft launch” from August 27-31.
