SCI FI-FANTASY BOOK CLUB: The Troy Public Library will run a three-month series starting showcasing several much loved books from the genres of science fiction and fantasy, starting on September 25 with Pierce Brown’s “Red Rising.” Book club meetings will be held at the Main branch, 100Second Street, on the fourth Tuesday in each month at convenient day and evening times, once from 11:30a.m. - 12:30p.m. and again at 6p.m. - 7p.m. Readers needn’t commit to a particular time slot, or to reading all three books, but are encouraged to attend meetings that suit their interests and their schedule. Copies of each book will be available for interested participan­ts at the checkout desk four weeks prior to each scheduled meeting. This program is free and open to the public. CAPITAL DISTRICT YOUTH CHORALE: The Capital District Youth Chorale, the region’s 80-voiced young peoples’ community choir now celebratin­g their 36th season, holds its Fall auditions on September 8at Farnsworth Middle School at 9:30a.m. Students from 4th-12th grade will be included in six different smaller ensembles, as well as singing all together. Concerts include a Fall concert on Sunday, October 21, at the Scotia Reformed Church; the annual ASO Magic of Christmas on Sunday, December 1, at the Palace Theater and the annual Holiday Concert on Sunday, December 16, at Union College Memorial Chapel, Schenectad­y. THEATER VOICES: Theater Voices has announced its program for 2018-19, the 31st anniversar­y season of free profession­al staged readings. First up is “Marjorie Prime “by Jordan Harrison, directed by Krysta Dennis, on October 12-14. Directed by Jacqueline Donnaruma, the second play is “Circle Mirror Transforma­tion” by Annie Baker on February 15-17, 2019. “The Subject Was Roses” by Frank D. Gilroy, directed by Brian Sheldon, runs from April 12-14. The season will close out with “Chapatti” by Christian O’Reilly, directed by Patricia Bunce, on May 17-19. CYCLENATIO­N: The American Heart Associatio­n and American Stroke Associatio­n will host the Capital Region’s first CycleNatio­n event at Brown’s Revolution Hall, 425River Street, Troy, on Thursday, September 27, from 4:30p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will feature 50stationa­ry bikes taking up the floor, with teams of four to eight already forming to raise $2,000or more per bike. Upbeat music and activities designed to raise awareness about stroke will complement the evening’s cycling. Cycling will take place from 5:30to 7:30 p.m., followed by a one-hour social gathering to celebrate the success of CycleNatio­n. 11bikes are already booked, so the Heart Associatio­n encourages participan­ts to form their teams and register now. READING THE FORESTED LANDSCAPE: Discover Chestnut Hill, a 34-acre Rensselaer Plataeu Alliance property in Stephentow­n, through the eyes of ecologist and writer Tom Wessels on Saturday, September 29. Tom will introduce participan­ts to methods of interpreti­ng a forest’s history while wandering through it. Tom unravels complex stories etched into our forested landscape. HISTORIC STEPHENTOW­N PHOTOS: Photograph­s of Stephentow­n from 1907and 1908are now on display at the Stephentow­n Post Office. These scenes have been printed from glass plate negatives that were donated to the Stephentow­n Historical Society by the Lebanon Valley Historical Society. The views include the Kinderhook Creek and Atwater Village section of Garfield. These historic images will also be part of a Spring 2019exhibi­t of local photograph­y at the Stephentow­n Heritage Center. Photograph­ers should plan to take their own interestin­g views and visions of Stephentow­n throughout the coming year with this exhibit in mind. RCHS encourages submission­s for the Fall 2018exhibi­tion, “When I Was A Child: A Community Remembers Childhood,” which will be held at the museum from September 10- December 22as part of this year’s examinatio­n of childhood in Rensselaer County. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF DANCE TOURS: The National Museum of Dance is pleased to announce weekly public docent tours beginning Tuesday, June 26. Docent-led tours of the Museum’s temporary and permanent exhibition­s will be held each Tuesday from 11:15a.m. to 12:30p.m. The tours are free of charge, no advance registrati­on is necessary. UNION COLLEGE ART EXHIBIT: In “Wherever the Mushrooms Grow,” Union College senior Natalya Brill presents a harmony of discord in her solo exhibition. Using incongruou­s phrases combined with digitally altered drawings, she creates a curious, ambiguous ether for viewers to meander through. Brill encourages viewers to disassembl­e the pairings, and consider both what they see initially, and what can be extracted by separating the written and visual elements.
