TROY, N.Y. » After the first couple of days of school are over this week, students and their families will be able to enjoy a Family Fun Day event in Prospect Park, hosted by Billy Carter of Kingdom Ministries.

From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, families can come out to Prospect Park to receive free backpacks and school supplies, free hot dogs and hamburgers, free ice cream, along with free pony rides and a petting zoo.

While there, families can also receive information from various organizations, including NYSERDA, MVP Healthcare and Sfaelink Wireless. People will also be able to enjoy music and other entertainment along with some inspirational speeches.

Carter said there will be over 100 backpacks, with many of those donated by Nite Owl News in downtown Troy.

“A lot of community groups have joined together once again to have a great community event,” said Carter, while noting how this is the 7th year he is hosting this event.

Carter said he believes it is important and beneficial for him and all of his community partners and sponsors to continue to host this type of event each year for families around the Capital Region.

“We try to save families money and it’s also good to engage the families with other agencies that want to help,” said Carter. “You have all of these outside agencies that are really looking forward to meeting them, these people service the same people, but it’s good for them to meet them outside of the business office and in a nice community environment.”

Carter also said that he continues to host it because he likes to see the children and their families have a good time, and he feels it’s a good way to get everyone even more ready for the school year.

“It’s about the smile on the kids faces, about people having someplace to go and it’s a nice free event and it saves people a ton of money,” said Carter. “We’re very fortunate and we have a lot of volunteers that help, everybody has the same agenda, we just want to help the kids.”

Carter said with hosting this event a couple of days after school starts gives the students an opportunity to get some supplies that they may have forgot to get before the first day of school.
