CAR CHASE ENDS IN WATERVLIET
WATERVLIET, N.Y. » A car chase that started in the city of Troy ended Wednesday afternoon inside the Fenimore Trace Apartments on Troy Schenectady Road, according to the Troy Police Department
Troy Police Captain John Becker Jr., said at about 11:50 a.m. Troy police patrol vehicles attempted to stop a vehicle with two occupants in it that were known to have warrants.
Becker declined to give the names for the two suspects or what they were wanted for.
“They we’re known to have violent criminal histories and believed to be in possession of a firearm,” said Becker.
Becker said Troy patrols attempted to stop the vehicle with the unidentified male suspects near Hoosick Street and that the vehicle was chased to the Feninmore Trace Apartments in the city of Watervliet.
“The occupants fled into one of the buildings [inside the Fenimore Trace Apartments],” said Becker. “Soon after a perimeter was established.”
Becker said Troy’s Emergency Response Team was called in and that shortly after 2 p.m. the two suspects inside of the apartment peacefully surrendered and were taken into custody. Becker also said police evaluated the apartment complex during the incident.
“The two suspects peacefully surrender to waiting officers outside of the apartment,” said Becker. “We used every resource at our disposal including family members.”
Becker said it was important to ensure that the public remained safe during the whole incident. Officials with the Watervliet City School District went into a lockout and kids that lived inside the apartments were being held until after the incident cleared.
“I think it was done out of an abundance of caution, we didn’t want to rush things, time was on our side in this particular case,” said Becker. “....The public’s safety was at the forefront of our decision making processes and I think it was a very positive outcome.”
Becker said police believe the suspects had a family relation within the Fenimore Trace Apartments.
Troy Police sad they were assisted by members of the State Police, Watervliet Police, Colonie Police, Green Island Police, Watervliet Fire Department, along with Colonie EMS. Becker said there were no injuries reported during the incident.
Late Wednesday afternoon, Becker said that no weapons were found, but he did say late Wednesday afternoon that the investigation is still ongoing and that detectives were going to execute a search warrant of the apartment and of the vehicle.
