UAlbany adds two alumni to coaching staff
ALBANY, N.Y. » The University at Albany men’s lacrosse program will welcome back John Maloney as an Assistant Coach and Connor Russell as a Volunteer Assistant this coming season, Head Coach Scott Marr has announced.
“I am extremely fortunate to have two former players return to Albany and continue our tradition of competing at the highest level,” Marr said. “Having former players return to coach shows the true love and commitment to our program. I am pleased that John and Connor have returned home!”
Maloney, a 2016 graduate with a degree in Human Biology, was a two-time All-America East midfielder and senior captain for the Great Danes. He finished his collegiate career with 76 goals, 45 assists and 127 ground balls before playing one season of Major League Lacrosse with the Chesa-
peake Bayhawks, totaling 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 10 games.
A native of Victor, N.Y., Maloney spent one season as an assistant coach at Skidmore College in 201617 and another at St. John Fisher this past year.
“Excited to bring John back to campus in a coaching capacity,” Marr said. “John has a tremendous IQ for the game along with professional playing experience that he will share with our group. John is young and energetic and has a great feel for people. We are very pleased he has come back to continue his journey as a Great Dane.”
Russell graduated from UAlbany in 2017 with a degree in Sociology and then spent a season as Associate Head Coach at SUNY Geneseo. While at UAlbany, he was an undergraduate assistant coach responsible for developing strategies for the team’s face- off unit and developing faceoff athletes.
“Connor Russel joins our staff as a volunteer after a one-year stint at Geneseo,” Marr said. “Connor’s playing career as a Dane was cut short unfortunately by injury, but that didn’t stop Connor from contributing his senior year as a student coach. We welcome Connor back to work with our face- off units. Connor has a solid work ethic that will absolutely filter down into our players.”
