Two local men accused of stealing a car in Watervliet
WATERVLIET, N.Y. >> The Watervliet Police Department said they recently arrested two local men who were found to be in possession of a stolen vehicle.
On Oct. 2, the Watervliet Police Department said they took a complaint from a city resident at approximately 5 p.m. about their vehicle being stolen.
Police said at this time, a notification was sent out to surrounding agencies with the vehicle’s description and an approximate time frame when the vehicle went missing. Within minutes, officials said the Troy Police Department located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on it. Police said the driver failed to comply and fled at a high rate of speed.
Officials said due to safety concerns, the Troy Police Department did not pursue it.
A short time later, police said a Watervliet Police officer observed this vehicle crash at the intersection of 3rd Avenue/ 1st Street in the City of Watervliet.
Officials said a description to responding units of two black male subjects exiting the vehicle and fleeing on foot to the area of Idlewild Park was quickly radioed in. Watervliet and Troy officers gave chase, apprehending one of the subjects quickly. Watervliet Police Department with the assistance of Colonie, Troy, Menands, and NYS ENCON Police searched the surround-
ing areas.
The Colonie Police Department, at the request of Watervliet PD, deployed their drone with an infrared camera, which was able to locate the second subject hiding in an open field with tall grass. That subject was subsequently detained and arrested as well.
Police said they arrested Carey Conyers, 28, of 187
Dartmouth Street, Cohoes and Tyon Baker, 17, of 100 25th Street apartment 546, Watervliet and charged them with Criminal possession of stolen property in the 3rd degree, a felony, and Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the 2nd degree, a misdemeanor.
Police said both subjects were sent to Albany County Correctional Facility pending arraignment.
Officials said the incident is still under investigation and other charges could be added.
