Few free passes in Section 2 tournament

They are the smallest of the bigs.

The Section 2 Class AA girls soccer tournament boasts, or rather hosts, just nine teams beginning Wednesday night in East Greenbush when No. 8 Columbia hosts No. 9 Albany High in a preliminar­y round as the fall tournament gets underway.

The winner will travel to No. 1 Bethlehem Friday afternoon as No. 5 Shaker travels to No. 4 Saratoga and No. 7 Colonie travels to No. 2 Shenendeho­wa for a 5:30 p.m. tilt.

Averill Park is the No. 1 seed in the Class A tournament, awaiting Tuesday’s winner between No. 9 Troy High at No. 8 Lansingbur­gh, a 6:30 p.m. contest. The winner will face the Warriors at 3 p.m. Friday.

Also in a play-in on Tues-

day, No. 10 Emma Willard will travel to face No. 7 Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. That winner will travel to No. 2 seeded South Glens Falls for a 7 p.m. scheduled start also on Friday.

No. 4 Ballston Spa, also received a bye, will face the winner of No. 12 Amsterdam at No. 5 Scotia, 3 p.m. Friday.

In Class B, Holy Names was the lone top seed to receive a bye, allowing for the field to be cut in half after seven contests set for Thursday.

No. 9 Schuylervi­lle travels to No. 7 Catholic High at 3 p.m., No. 4 Mechanicvi­lle hosts No. 13 Albany Academy for Girls at 6:30 p.m. No. 11 Cohoes will travel to No. 6 Tamarac for a 3 p.m. tilt and No. 15 Corinth takes on No. 2 Schalmont at 6:30 p.m.

No one got a free pass in the first round in the Class C tournament as all 16 teams will start play Saturday.

No. 1 seeded Stillwa- ter will host No. 16 Granville at 6 p.m., No. 2 Lake George will host No. 15 Waterford-Halfmoon at 1 p.m.; No. 8 Maple Hill will host No. 9 Bolton/ Warrensbur­g at 11 a.m. with No. 7 Cambridge hosting No. 10 Greenwich at 11 a.m. No. 11 Hoosick Falls will travel to No. 6 Canajohari­e for a 1 p.m. tilt; No. 13 Middleburg­h will travel to take on No. 4 Hoosic Valley at 1 p.m. and No. 14 Rensselaer takes on No. 3 Schoharie at 1 p.m.

The Class AA semifinals will take place at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Stillwater with the final set for 6 p.m. Oct. 29. Stillwater will also host the semifinals at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 with the title game set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28.

The Class B semifinals will be held at Lansingbur­gh Oct. 23 with the final set for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Stillwater. The Class C semifinals are set for 3 and 5 p.m. Oct. 27 at Lansingbur­gh with the final set there 7 p.m. Oct. 30.
