TROY – Joan T. Valentine, 86, died Monday, October 22 in Silver Spring, Maryland after a long illness. Born in Troy, she was the daughter of Thomas and Catherine Doyle and the husband of Harvey O. Valentine. Joan was a 1950 graduate of Catholic Central High School and worked for more than 15 years for the New York State Department of Labor and the Department of Tax and Finance. She was a communican­t of Sacred Heart Church in Troy. She also liked watching baseball, football, golf and tennis on TV and cheering for Notre Dame and the Yankees. Joan very much enjoyed socializin­g with friends at the Troy Elks Lodge and Italian Community Center, and going out to dinner, shows and movies. In later years Joan loved visiting her grandchild­ren in Maryland and seeing shows at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and on Broadway in New York City. Survivors include her son, Harvey T. Valentine and his wife Eileen Fisher of Silver Spring, grandchild­ren Kate, Billy and Shea, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predecease­d by her husband, son Kevin formerly of Troy, brother Thomas Doyle of St. Petersburg, Fla., and sisters Kathryn Goodman of Shrewsbury, Mass.; and Dorothy VanHeusen and Marilyn Doyle of Troy. The funeral will be on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Daniel. D. Purcell Funeral Home from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday. The family wishes to thank the staff at Evergreen Nursing Home in East Greenbush, New York and the staff of Holy Cross Hospice in Silver Spring, Maryland. Joan also greatly enjoyed visits from her niece, JoAnn Normand, during her time at Evergreen.
