LANELLE “LYNNE” HIEMSTRA

Lanelle “Lynne” Post was born on September 6, 1932, in Bigelow, Minnesota. She was the youngest of eight children raised alone by her mother, Gertrude (Tuinstra) Post, who was newly widowed by the death of Lynne’s father, Lambert Post. Lynne graduated from high school at the top of her class in Harris, Iowa, and received a teaching certificate from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. One of Lynne’s early teaching positions was in Pella, Iowa, where she met Central College student, Carl Wayne Hiemstra. The young couple moved to New Jersey to pursue further education, and were married in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1956. Lynne received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Rutgers University, and a Masters’ Degree in Library Science from SUNY Albany in Albany, New York. She turned her life-long love of books and reading into a career as a librarian, and spent 20 years as the librarian of Gardiner Dickenson Elementary School in Wynantskill, New York. After retiring from teaching, Lynne was trained as a church consultant and assisted Carl’s specialized interim ministry work in New York and internationally, serving churches in Vienna, Austria, London, England, and Bogota, Columbia. She and Carl recently moved back to his home town of Pella, Iowa, where she passed away on November 14, 2018, at the Pella Regional Health Center at the age of 86 years. Lynne is survived by her husband, Rev. Carl W. Hiemstra of Pella, Iowa; her son Hans Hiemstra, daughter-in-law Kristen, and granddaughters Haley and Zoe Hiemstra of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; her daughter Heidi Hiemstra, son-in-law Geoff Pinkerton, and grandson Ian Pinkerton of Frankfort, Kentucky; her sister Lois and husband Duane Loerts of Sibley, Iowa; brother-in-law and sister-inlaw Douglas Begg of County Kent, England, Arlys (John) Post of Slayton MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Gertrude and her father, Lambert Post; the following siblings: Eunice Post Begg , John Post, Joann Post Breit, Lloyd Post, Milton and Mary Post, and Corelus Post who died in childhood, and her parents-inlaw, Martin J. and Henrietta (Rietveld) Hiemstra. Lynne was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed. She was an avid gardener, an adventurous world traveler, and a phenomenal gourmet cook. Lynne was passionate about social justice and supported many charities and causes during her lifetime. Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 17, at the Second Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa. Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home in Pella was in charge of arrangements.
