Police arrest man slumped over wheel for DWI

SCHODACK, N.Y. >> A 26-yearold Valatie man was charged with DWI after police found him slumped over the wheel in traffic, according to New York State Police.

New York State Police in the Town of Schodack said they arrested Jason Ortiz, 26, of Valatie and charged him with DWI.

Around 4:00 a.m., Jan. 6, troopers said they responded to a report of a vehicle stopped in traffic with Ortiz slumped over the wheel. Troopers found t he vehicle stopped in the middle of both southbound lanes.

Troopers said the vehicle was in drive and Ortiz’s foot was on the brake.

State police said they then knocked on the window multiple times, Ortiz woke up and looked at the responding Troopers. That’s when Troopers said Ortiz drove off refusing to comply and driving erraticall­y.

A low-speed chase ensued while the vehicle failed to maintain its lane striking a road delineator. Police said that the vehicle ultimately came to a stop and Ortiz was taken into custody.

Upon interviewi­ng Ortiz, police said he displayed bloodshot glassy eyes, slurred speech, impaired coordinati­on and an odor of an alcoholic beverage from his breath. Police said Ortiz refused all Standardiz­ed Field Sobriety Tests.

Ortiz was charged with the following:

• Driving While Intoxicate­d; Unclassifi­ed Misdemeano­r

• Resisting Arrest; Class A Misdemeano­r

• Reckless Driving; Unclassifi­ed Misdemeano­r

• Disorderly Conduct; Violation

• Traffic Infraction­s Ortiz was arraigned in the Town of Schodack Court and was sent to Rensselaer County Jail in lieu of bail.
