Troy police remember K-9 Aron
TROY, N.Y. >> The City of Troy Police Benevolent Association is mourning the loss of retired police canine Aron.
K-9 Aron passed away peacefully on Sat. Feb. 9.
Police said Aron’s career started in Sept. 2007, partnering with Officer Rob Smith. During those humble beginnings, Aron attended basic patrol/tracking school and explosive detection school with Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and the Syracuse Police Department.
Officials said that K-9 Aron faithfully served the Collar City for 10 years. As an essential fabric of the department K-9 Aron assisted with numerous explosive searches and sweeps, tracking missing and wanted persons, apprehending suspects and protecting his partner Officer Smith. K-9 Aron also lent his services to neighboring communities across the region as well.
Among some of K-9 Aron’s notable assignments were assisting with the dignitary protection and explosive sweeps for then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at the Times Union Center in 2016, police said.
Following the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon in 2014, the Boston Police Department requested numerous resources from around the region to assist in the explosive sweeps for the 2015 marathon; and police said K-9 Aron answered that call.
In 2010, police said Troy PD’s K-9 team assisted the FBI JTTF out of Albany with a complex domestic terrorism case, and again K-9 Aron answered the call.
September 2009 saw President Barack Obama visit Hudson Valley Community College and officials said K-9 Aron and Officer Smith coordinated with multiple federal and local agencies to provide a safe trip for the president.
