NASSAU, N.Y. >> Giving back to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and given us so much in return is something that is important to many people.

This Saturday, Feb. 23, Assemblyman Jake Ashby, himself also a veteran, is hosting a free Veterans Resource Fair.

The fair will be held at the Chandler Young Veterans Association in Nassau, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

“It’s resource fair so there’s going to be a lot of different vendors there regarding, housing, employment, health care, really just highlighting the services that are out there in our region to help our veterans of all ages and of all eras. It’s a diverse crowd and there’s a variety of services out there that can help people. I think it’s important that we boost that message as much as we possibly can and usher veterans in to make sure that they’re getting the services that they’ve earned,” Ashby said of the services and agencies that will be available to veterans attending the fair.

At the fair representatives from community outreach programs at the county, state and federal agencies will be on-hand to help veterans obtain services with issues pertaining to them.

“In my district, I think that the veterans coordinators for the counties do an incredible job, Peter Goebel in particular in Rensselaer County does a phenomenal job of linking veterans to benefits and services they qualify for at the county, state and federal level,” Ashby said of the Rensselaer County veterans coordinator.

Ashby also reiterated how vital those services can be to helping address issues affecting veterans.

“It could be a variety of things, it could be housing, they could be at risk for homelessness and there are a lot of services available for that. Legal services that they may need, educational services that are out there and then healthcare as well. Those are the longstanding issues that we’re seeing and then there’s obviously issues that are embedded in those, suicide really being embedded into the health care component,” Ashby noted.

“Making sure that we have a solid network of leaders out here that are dedicated to helping our veterans is really imperative,” Ashby added of connecting those leaders and veterans together.

If you’re a veteran looking to get more information on the resource fair and or how you can get involved in helping our veterans, Ashby notes you can contact him via his Facebook page.
