COHOES, N.Y. >> With all six Common Council seats up for election this year, another candidate recently announced their candidacy for a seat in the 6th Ward.

Just i n Alesio, 38, said he is running as a Democrat for the 6th Ward council seat.

Alesio said his family moved to the Spindle City when he was seven and that he has resided in the city since then. He is also a graduate of Cohoes High School.

Alesio and his wife, Shanna, have lived on the Island for the past four years and said that his family enjoys living in the city.

The 38-year-old UPS employee said this will be the first time he is running for a political position. Alesio said he is endorsed by his work union, The International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

“I feel like I could be a good strong advocate for my community,” said Alesio. “My goal is just

to continue moving the city forward. I feel like the city is moving in the right direction, it’s an exciting time and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Alesio said he did not have any specific goals that he wanted to focus on for his campaign, besides promising to be a strong advocate for his community.

“I feel the job of a council member is to be the advocate for the community and be an advocate for the people,” he said. “My goal is to hear the people, and I want to knowwhat everybody else needs, what are their needs, what are their concerns and then at that point, I will be a strong advocate between my community and City Hall.”

“I’m not going to run out and say ‘I’m going to go do this, and I’m going to do that’, because I’m not privy to a lot of information throughout the city and how a lot of this stuff goes because I’m not in it, so the only promise that I’ll make to people is that I’m going to work harder than anybody else, I will be a face and I will be available to the people,” Alesio added.

Alesio said he decided to

continue to reside in Cohoes since he loves the community atmosphere there.

“I love the sense of community; it’s a small community and everybody knows everybody, some people find that not so attractive, but I love it,” he said.

The candidate also spoke about how he thinks some positive work has already been taking place throughout the city and on Van Schaick Island.

“They’ve done a lot with [ Van Schaick Island] pond and with the new construction, I mean it’s gorgeous,” Alesio said.

Aprimary election date is set for Tuesday, June 25.
