New York takes on Vermont in weekend festivitie­s

Ski action on the New York Capital District Ski Council level takes place this weekend at Vermont’s Pico, Killington and Sugarbush ski areas, with the OC club also hosting its annual Giant Slalom Invitation­al 2-Run race on Sunday at West Mountain in Queensbury.

Club members will be at Pico, Friday, March 1, at Killington, Sunday, March 3, and at Sugarbush on March 6. Racing OC members will at West Mountain in Queensbury, N. Y., Sunday, March 3, to race in a 2-Run GS on the Blue Trail along with other individual­s and teams from other council clubs. This event is the last council GS competitio­n of the 2018/19 schedule. The OC club and NCYDSC will host a post-race luncheon in West’s base lodge where awards will be handed out to participat­ing racers. Special lift ticket rates of $30 for adults and $20 for juniors is offered.

For those of you who prefer cross-country skiing, OC XC sliders will travel by bus on Sunday to Tug Hill in Camden, N. Y., for a day at Osceola XC Ski Center.

Hats off to legendary skiwearmak­er and skier, Klaus Obermeyer, 99, for win- ning the Snowsports Industries America (SIA) Carson White Snowsports Achievemen­t Award.

When you look around the corner, signs of spring skiing days are not far off. I know some skiers who ski in early winter, sit out the colder weeks of January/ February, but return for the warmer days of March and April to finish out the season.
