Students make care packages for area soldiers

- By Record staff

WESTSANDLAKE, N.Y. » Students at West Sand Lake Elementary wanted to make sure that soldiers know they are missed back home.

Mrs. Chenette’s first- grade class kick-started a service project of preparing care packages to be sent to siblings of current students that are serving in the military. Two of the soldiers were even able to pick up their packages in person.

In early December, one student, Emily Simpson, mentioned how much she missed her older brother who was in boot camp. Emily asked if she could make him a card and the whole class ended up creating cards for her brother.

Not long after the cards were sent, two other students, Anthony Weismann, and Kayla Gicewicz noted that they, too, had siblings in the military.

Mrs. Chenette’s class came up with the idea of creating Kindness Care Packages.

February’s word of the month was “Friendship” and everyone

at West Sand Lake Elementary began to make cards and send in care package items.

“Our WSL school is truly such a family and before we knew it other students and grade levels in our building were making cards and sending in care package items. It was amazing to see,” Chenette said.

Ser v i cemen Owen Scanu and Jeremy Weismann were able to come home between training exercises and picked up their care packages in person.

The two spent time with students and answered questions about being in the military.

The third serviceman receiving a care package, Kyle Gicewicz, is stationed overseas and will receive his package through the mail.

“We really cannot put into words how amazing these visits were,” Chenette added.
