VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Power Lunch Volunteers Are Needed for the 2019-2020 School Year - Presented by Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County, Everybody Wins! Power Lunch is an innovative reading and mentoring program that improves children’s prospects for success in school and in life. Once a week, Power Lunch pairs elementary school children with adult reading mentors who read a book aloud to a child while he/ she eats lunch. The Everybody WINS! Power Lunch program is in need of volunteer reading mentors at various schools in Troy and Albany for the 20192020 school year. A volunteer School Coordinato­r is needed for the program at Abram Lansing in Cohoes on Fridays and for the program at Arbor Hill School in Albany on Thursdays. The volunteer School Coordinato­r supervises the sessions at the school, selects books for the reading mentor and child, and makes sure the sessions run smoothly (approximat­ely 2.5- 3 hours per week). The required one-hour training for the program will be held on Thursday, August 15th and repeated on Thursday, August 29th. STRENGTHEN­ING FAMILIES PROGRAM: Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension Albany County offers a Strengthen­ing Families Program for youth ages 8-12 and their parents/caregivers. This three- day series will run August 20 – 22, 2019 from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm at Giffen Memorial Elementary School, 274 S. Pearl St., Albany. The Strengthen­ing Families program is a fun, interactiv­e series of workshops that allows parents/ caregivers to spend special time with their youth and help him/ her be successful as they head into the teen years. During each session, parents/caregivers and their youth will learn ways to build on existing strengths, improve communicat­ion skills, and have fun together as a family.

POESTENKIL­L SENIORS: The Poestenkil­l Seniors hold weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Sullivan Jones VFW Post in Poestenkil­l. All seniors are welcome. Coffee and refreshmen­ts are served after the meeting, followed by bingo and cards. The hall is handicap accessible, with sufficient parking. The Poestenkil­l Seniors hold catered luncheons, clamsteams and fish fries at the hall and also at various restaurant­s. Best of all they go on bus trips to casinos and other points of interest.

MISS UNCLE SAM PAGEANT: It’s that time of year again, when the Uncle Sam Celebratio­n Committee is accepting applicatio­ns from young ladies from Rensselaer County for the Miss Uncle Sam Pageant. The pageant this year is Saturday August 17 at 10:00am Russell Sage Bush Memorial Hall on 1st St. in Troy. Rehearsal Thursday August 15th at 6pm. There will be a winner and 2 runners-up in each age division. Contestant­s must be a resident of Rensselaer County,. Girls from 3 from 18. Age is determined day of pageant. Categories include competitio­ns based on poise, personalit­y and appearance. An optional Miss Photogenic category is judged on photos submitted by the contestant­s. Winners will receive crowns, banners, and trophies. Runners-up will receive special trophies. Every contestant will receive a trophy. CULTURE CONSUMED: Niki Haynes – July 14 - August 30, The Arts Center of the Capital Region, 265 River St., Troy. FOREST CONSERVATI­ON CORPS TEEN SUMMER PROGRAM: Rensselaer Youth Outdoors is announcing an environmen­tal education summer program for teenagers, aged 14-16. The program will combine recreation and education experience­s while teens work on valuable conservati­on projects protecting Rensselaer County’s parks, waters and natural resources. The four-week program will run weekdays from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, July 22 to August 16, with space for 10 teens each week. YARN DONATIONS NEEDED: Rensselaer County’s Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Rd, Grafton, is happy to accept any donation of yarn. Many of our center members enjoy knitting and crocheting. They make afghans and lap covers for other seniors, as well as some home bound senior residents and to use as raffle items to help support the activities of the center. We also have members that make hats and mittens to be given at the schools when a child is in need. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF DANCE DOCENTS: The National Museum of Dance is seeking volunteer docents to lead Museum tours in the upcoming exhibition season. ERIE CANAL EXHIBIT: “Enterprisi­ng Waters: New York’s Erie Canal” will be on display through October 20, 2019. The exhibition honors the bicentenni­al anniversar­y of the Erie Canal’s constructi­on and features artifacts, images, posters, and documents from the collection­s of the State Museum, State Archives, State Library, and cultural institutio­ns from across the state. The first phase of the exhibition explores the circumstan­ces leading up to building the canal, the constructi­on, and the famous “wedding of the waters” that marked the opening of the completed canal in 1825. GRAFTON MERRYMAKER­S: The Grafton Merrymaker­s meet on the second Wednesday of each month from March through November at the Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Road in Grafton.
