Rensselaer police arrest woman accused of posing as landlord

- By Record staff

RENSSELAER, N.Y. » On Sept. 9, city police said that they started receiving numerous complaints regarding scam/fraud after a social media post from a victim.

City police said the reports involved an internet listing for a house for rent, 25 Lindbergh Ave., and the “landlord” would take deposits on the property from interested parties.

The current resident of the property, Kimberly Rogers, 41, of Rensselaer, is accused of fraudulently renting a property that she does not own or have the right to do so.

Police say Rogers would list the residence on the internet as a rental, show the property, and would take security deposits from people leading them to believe they would be renting the residence.

When the victim(s) would have issues with the “landlord” responding, companies to switch utilities, or taking possession of the residence, police say Rogers would not return their deposit when requested.

Police say the complaints go back to the beginning of Aug. of 2019.

On Sept. 11, Rogers was arrested and charged with fourthdegree grand larceny and first-degree scheme to defraud, both felonies.

Rogers was arraigned before Judge Laquidara of the Rensselaer City Court and was remanded on a $10,000 cash or bond to the Rensselaer County Jail.

Rogers is slated to return to Rensselaer City Court on Sept. 17 at 9 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing, and police say more charges will follow.

Police also ask anyone with any information regarding this case or any possible victims contact the City of Rensselaer Police Department at 518- 462-7451.
