RENSSELAER CEMETERY: All across the country and locally, grassroots organizations and individuals are working to take care of historic cemeteries that may be found along the road, in someone’s backyard, or connected to an old church. Often they are in need of maintenance or total restoration, the occupants relatives having moved on long ago. Please join the Greenbush Historical Society Sunday, September 15, 2PM, at the Greenbush Community Library to learn about the Restoration of the Van Rensselaer Cemetery. Chris White, a local cemetery conservator and genealogist, will tell about the restoration project at the historic cemetery located between Route 9J and Amtrak’s Boston Railway in East Greenbush. Cemeteries are an important part of our history and the gravestones tell stories of the people who once lived and worked, usually memorialized in a few carved words. The Greenbush Historical Society under the expert guidance of Joe Ferrannini from Gravestone Matters rescued and restored the Karner Family Cemetery on Best Road in East Greenbush. Photos of that project will be displayed at the meeting. The program is free and open to the public. As seating is limited, please register with the library at 518-477-7476.

ELDERABUSEWORKSHOP: Unfortunately in society today, many elders are reporting that they are experiencing forms of abuse and/or neglect. Some elders have reported that they

did not recognize that the way they were being treated was abusive, until they learned about the various types of elder abuse. Additionally, those that do recognize the abuse, do not always know where to turn for help. Many elders have reported feeling helpless to stop the abuse, or that they have to tolerate it, in order to continue to live in their homes, or to get the support they need to get to medical appointments or to the grocery store. This workshop focuses on identifying the many types of abuse and neglect that elders may experience, empowering everyone to take action (in a safe manner) when they see/hear of abuse, offer options for supports/safety to help those that experience the abuse and provide hope to elders, that they do not need to remain in abusive situations. By training elders and the community at large, we are hoping to raise awareness of this serious issue, and to help decrease it’s prevalence through ongoing education and resources. This free public workshop will be presented by staff in the Sexual Assault and Crime Victims Assistance Program of St. Peter’s Heath Partners on September 16th at 6:00pm. Advanced registration is recommended. For more information call the library at 274-7071or online at www.thetroylibrary.org. The Troy Public Library is located at 100Second Street, Troy.
