HVCC, local stars roll past New Jersey, 35-7

The Hudson Valley Community College football team (3-3) went on the road to win their second straight game after defeating the New Jersey Warriors 35-7on Saturday afternoon at St. Vianney High School in Holmdel, N.J. The Vikings jumped out an early 6-0 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by last week’s NJCAA Region 3 Player of the Week, Desi Floyd. Floyd’s touchdown run was set up by a 50-yard catch and run by receiver Melvin Reid. In the second quarter, Reid finally found his way into the end zone on a 21-yard pass from quarterbac­k Alex Dembroski. Reid’s touchdown capped a 7-play, 67-yards drive in 3:48. Nearly seven minutes later, the Vikings scored again and capped a scoring drive with 11plays for 66yards on a Dembroski touchdown pass to Daniel Manneh. Hudson Valley entered halftime leading 20-0. Floyd finished the game with 138 rushing yards on 21 carries, which included a 20yard run, the longest on the day. In the last two games, Floyd had 388 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the Vikings offense. Dembroski finished the game with 204passing yards, which includes a 50-ayrd pass to Reid in the opening quarter. Dembroski tossed three touchdown passes and did not turn the ball over as he finished with zero intercepti­ons. Freshman tight end Jeremey Clayton (Burnt Hills/ Burnt Hills- Ballston Lake H.S.) recorded two catches for six yards and added three successful extra-points following three of the Vikings touchdowns. Clayton also assisted in pushing the Warriors back into their zone with two punts landing inside the 20-yard line. Clayton also converted three of four extra points for HVCC and averaged 33.4yards on his five punts, two inside the New Jersey 20-yard line. Freshman kicker Robert Goldman (Clifton Park/ Shenendeho­wa H.S.) had six kickoffs for 207yards, averaging 34.5yard per kick. On the defensive side of the ball, freshman outside linebacker Hunter Redden ( Troy/ Troy H. S.) came up with a solo tackle. Sophomore running back Mitchell Flanger (Latham/ Shaker H.S.), freshman defensive back Sebastian Gordon (Troy/ GED), sophomore offensive lineman Scott O’Hara (Troy/Lansingbur­gh H. S.), freshman offensive lineman Nick Brazzell (Cohoes/Cohoes H. S.), freshman defensive lineman Carlos Maldonado (Albany/ Watervliet H. S.), freshman offensive lineman Joran Lewis- Shamblee (Albany/Albany H. S.), freshman offensive lineman Tim Stocker (Burnt Hills/ Burnt Hills- Ballston Lake H. S.), freshman offensive lineman Brandon Camaj (Saratoga/ Saratoga H.S.) and sophomore tight end Cyrus Whitney (Albany/Colonie H. S.) are all listed on the HVCC Vikings roster this fall.

UAlbany falls to New Hampshire in double OT, 4-3 ALBANY, N.Y. — Trailing 3-0 at the half, the No. 21 Great Danes stormed back to score three unanswered goals and force overtime. In sudden victory- second overtime, New Hampshire’s Ava Mariani scored an unassisted goal to hand the Great Danes their first America East loss, Friday afternoon. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the second quarter. Kayla Sliz struck first with a goal at 16:16before Bloem van den Brekel made it a 2-0game 90seconds later. Mariani later gave her team a three- goal edge with her first goal of the game in the 27th minute. Momentum begin to swing in favor of the Great Danes coming out of the break. Dana Bozek got her squad on the board with an unassisted tally at 33:56and Katie MacCallum brought the squad back within one, 3-2, following her goal in the 41st minute. UAlbany netted the equalizer in the fourth quarter. On the play, Elaina Burchell collected a rebound on her stick before batting it past the Wildcat goalkeeper to make it a 3-3game. The Great Danes drew three penalty corners in the second overtime but could not break through the New Hampshire defense. With two minutes remaining, Mariani scored the golden goal to break the Great Dane’s eight game win streak. UAlbany goalkeeper Melissa Nealon ( Mechanicvi­lle/Shenendeho­wa H.S.) turned back six shots in the Great Danes loss. Freshman forward/ defense Lillian Hickey (Hoosick Falls/ Hoosick Falls H. S.) came in off the bench for UAlbany. Junior forward/defense Carli Pelletier (Clifton Park/Shenendeho­wa H. S.) got the start for the Great Danes. RPI field hockey falls to Union, 2-1 TROY, N.Y. - Junior Katie Talacci had a goal and an assist to lead the Union College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute ( RPI) in a Liberty League matchup at Harkness Field. A forward, Talacci opened the scoring 7:25into the second quarter when she knocked the ball in through traffic from close range at the right of the cage. Senior Charlotte Leyland, who had a shot in the sequence, had the assist on the goal, Talacci’s fourth of the season. Cristina Boudreau made it 2- 0 just under five minutes later when she finished a feed from Talacci, who passed the ball to her at the middle of the goal. The marker was the first for the sophomore. Rensselaer freshman Brianna Duba pulled RPI to within 2-1 when she carried the ball into the circle and scored on a reverse hit from just inside the arc. It was her first career goal. RPI junior attack Sydney Luke (Eagle Bridge/Hoosick Falls H.S.) recorded a shot in the Engineers loss. Sage falls to Washington & Jefferson, 2- 0 Washington, PA — Sage’s field hockey team travelled to Pennsylvan­ia on Saturday for a match-up with the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College in an Empire 8match. The host Presidents collected a 2-0win over the Gators to improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8. The loss puts Sage at 6-7 overall and 0-3in the league. W & J scored the first goal of the afternoon at the 2:25 mark as Reghan Dunn scored on a penalty corner play of a pass from Rachel Fromm. Fromm scored the second goal of the day after she collected the ball from the left post and finished the play to help the Presidents to a 2-0 lead that held up as the final score. Sophomore goalkeeper Abigayle Greier (Elma, NY/ Iroquois Central) made seven saves in the match for the Gators. W & J’s Rena Isreal faced a pair of shots from the Gators in the contest. Freshman forward Emily Schoop (Hoosick Falls/ Hoosick Falls H. S.) started for the Gators.

RPI tops UConn for first victory, 5-3 HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior Chase Zieky recorded two goals and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team to a 5-3victory over the University of Connecticu­t on Saturday afternoon at XL Center. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-1 on the young season, while the Huskies drop to 0-2-1. UConn netted the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead after one. A loose puck popped out to the left point for Yan Kuznetsov, who ripped a shot home, through traffic, for his first goal of the year. Helpers on the opening salvo went to Carter Turnbull and Justin Howell. Freshman Simon Kjellberg gave the Engineers the lead for good (2-1) at 3:58 of the second, joining the rush on the right side and firing home his first collegiate goal from the top of the circle. Bowman and Zieky collected the helpers on the go-ahead tally. Late in the middle stanza, senior captain Will Reilly stole the puck along the right wall in the offensive zone and stepped into a wrist shot that found its way past Vomacka, short side, for his first goal of the season and 15th of his career. The unassisted marker came at 17:47 of the period. The Engineers went up 4-1 on freshman Ryan Mahshie’s second goal in as many games at 2: 26 of the third. Leading a 2- on-1 rush, Mahshie saw his first shot stopped by Vomacka, but was able to flip the rebound into the top left corner of the net. A power play goal from Zieky - the Engineers’ first of the season - gave the visitors a 5-1 lead at 3: 24 of the third. Working the puck around the top of the offensive zone, Zieky found a lane and snapped a shot under the crossbar for his second of the game. Helpers went to Kjellberg and Reilly. UMASS bests RPI, 5-3 Friday AMHERST, MASS. - Junior Mitchell Chaffee scored two goals and added an assist to lead the fourth-ranked University of Massachuse­tts men’s hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute ( RPI), on Friday night at Mullins Center. With the win, the Minutemen open the season at 1- 0, while the Engineers are 0-1. RPI opened the scoring late in the first period, when senior captain Will Reilly ( Toronto, ON/ Nanaimo Clippers) forced a turnover in the offensive zone and found freshman Zach Dubinsky ( Highland Park, IL/ Lincoln Stars) open in the left circle for his first collegiate tally. The Engineers took their 1- 0lead into the break, along with a 12- 9 edge in shots. The Engineers then came back twice to draw within a goal, including a tally from senior Patrick Polino (Buffalo, NY/ Lincoln Stars) at 3: 56 of the third. Finding some room in the middle of the slot, he slid a low shot past UMass sophomore goaltender Filip Lindberg (Espoo, Finland/ Tuto Hockey U20) for his first of the season. Senior forward Jake Marrello (Slingerlan­ds/ P. A. L. Junior Islanders) is part of the RPI men’s roster.

Penn State sweeps RPI on the road UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Izzy Heminger scored two goals, including the gamewinner to lead the Penn State University women’s hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechni­c Intitute (RPI), on Saturday afternoon at Pegula Arena. With the win, the Nittany Lions improve to 2-2-2, while the Engineers drop to 0- 6- 0. RPI women fall in to Penn State, 2- 0 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State University women’s hockey team scored goals in the first and third periods en route to posting a 2- 0 shutout of Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute ( RPI), on Friday afternoon at Pegula Arena. With the win, the Nittany Lions improve to 1-2-2overall, while the Engineers drop to 0- 5- 0. Junior goalie Jenn Gregg (Altamont/ Troy-Albany Ice Cats) did not see action in the loss for RPI.

UAlbany men’s soccer honors 1989team with 2- 0 win over UMass- Lowell ALBANY, N.Y. — On a night where the 18-win 1989 UAlbany men’s soccer team was honored at halftime, the University at Albany men’s soccer team continued its rivalry against UMass Lowell. The Great Danes remained undefeated against the Riverhawks at Casey Stadium, knocking off UMass Lowell 2-0. UAlbany and UMass Lowell have met in each of the last two America East Tournament­s, with the Great Danes winning in the 2017 championsh­ip game and the Riverhawks winning in the 2018 quarterfin­al. In the 15th minute, Austin DaSilva broke through the Riverhawks’ defense after intercepti­ng a pass and beat the UMass Lowell goalkeeper, Zach Rowell, one- on- one to put UAlbany up 1- 0. It was the first goal UMass Lowell had conceded in five games. In the 54th minute, DaSilva intercepte­d another pass deep in UMass Lowell territory and fought off two defenders to score his second goal of the game, and his 10th of the season. DaSilva moved into third place all time in single-season program history in the Division I era, tied with Nico Solabarrie­ta’s 2018 season. Since moving to Division I, DaSilva is only the third player in program history to score 10 or more goals in a single season (Solabarrie­ta ‘18, Afonso Pinherio ‘15& ‘16). Freshman defender Eli Donofrio ( Schenectad­y/ CBA) is on the roster for the Great Danes this fall. RPI draws at Skidmore College, 1-1 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior Dylan Confair scored a late equalizer to help the 13th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute (RPI) men’s soccer team to a 1-1 draw at Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field. With the tie, the Engineers extend their unbeaten streak to a school record 11 games and are now 11-1-1 overall (3-0-1Liberty League). The Thoroughbr­eds push their record to 5-4-3overall ( 1-3-1 Liberty League). With the win, their program record 10th in a row, the Engineers improve to 11-1 overall, while the Owls drop to 8-4. Junior forward Dante Boyd (Troy/ Troy H.S.) came in off the bench for the Engineers in the win as Freshman midfielder Ben Kogan (Clifton Park/ Shenendeho­wa H. S.) struck for a shot in his entrance into the contest. Sage falls to St. John Fisher, 1- 0 Albany, NY — Freshman forward Ben Woolingham scored at 59:54for the eventual winning goal as St. John Fisher defeated The Sage Colleges, 1-0in an Empire 8Conferenc­e men’s soccer game at the Albany College of Pharmacy Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals are now 1-1-1in the Empire 8 and 3-8-1 overall. The Gators fell to 1-3 in the conference and 6- 6 for the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Bourdeau (Castleton- on- Hudson/ Maple Hill H.S.) turned back one shot in the Gators loss. Sophomore midfielder/ forward Rafael- Enrique Holquin (Gansevoort/Christian Brothers Academy) recorded a shot after coming in off the bench as senior midfielder/ forward Alberto Cannistrac­i (Schenectad­y/ Colonie Central H.S.) started for Sage.

TROY, N.Y. – Senior center back Meagan Lettko scored the only goal of the game to lead the Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute (RPI) women’s soccer team to a 1-0victory over Skidmore College, on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5- 4-2 overall (2-2- 0 Liberty League), while the Thoroughbr­eds drop to 6-3-2 ( 13-0Liberty League). RPI finally broke through in the 58th minute, when Lettko ( Averill Park, NY/ Averill Park) leaped to get her head to a corner kick from classmate Alexis Castrellon (Conroe, TX/ Battlefiel­d). Keller got a piece of her initial shot, but Lettko made sure by smashing home the rebound inside the six. Sophomore defender Melissa Haas ( Clifton Park/Shenendeho­wa H. S.) started for the Thoroughbr­eds.
