Join us at the Troy Public Library where artist and instructor Sarah Nenno Bowen will be hosting a two-part workshop in two-hour sessions at the Troy Public Library on Mondays, January 6

& 13, at 5:30to 7:30PM. Each session will be led by an excerpt from the book “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino, and each session will have its own excerpt. Read and respond to this piece of literature with the use of materials such as paint, paper, graphite, markers, and more to create a mixed media masterpiec­e. Register in person, online, or by phone. The Poestenkil­l Seniors hold weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1p.m. at the Sullivan Jones VFW Post in Poestenkil­l. All seniors are welcome. Coffee and refreshmen­ts are served after the meeting, followed by bingo and cards. The hall is handicap accessible, with sufficient parking. The Poestenkil­l Seniors hold catered luncheons, clamsteams and fish fries at the hall and also at various restaurant­s. Best of all they go on bus trips to casinos and other points of interest.

Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020 FARMER DISCUSSION GROUP MEETINGS: January 9, 2020- Brunswick Family Community Center, 19Keyes Ln, Troy, NY 12180. The Capital Area Agricultur­e and Horticultu­re Program and Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension Albany County will be holding winter Farmer Discussion Group meetings in early January 2020. Dayton Maxwell, newly hired CAAHP Farm Business Management Educator will lead a discussion on farm business management in a challengin­g agricultur­al economy. Aaron Gabriel, CAAHP Agronomy Educator, will discuss new and old pests including the soybean cyst nematode, western bean cutworm, and several weeds (tall waterhemp, palmer amaranth, marestail, knapweeds, and bedstraws). These pests create new challenges that require diligent management. There is no charge for the meetings and lunch will be provided. Please register in advance so we can plan for lunch. Friday, Jan. 10 ISRAEL’S GOLANHEIGH­TS TALK:

B’nai Sholom Reform Congregati­on continues its popular “Synagogue Scholars” series with a presentati­on by Ed Rosen of Albany on the topography, demography and strategic importance of the Golan Heights. Rosen will present “Riding Through the History of the Golan” immediatel­y following the congregati­on’s Friday, January 10, Shabbat service that begins at 8p.m. B’nai Sholom is at 420Whiteha­ll Road, Albany. The service and program are open to all who wish to worship and learn. The Golan region of Israel has figured prominentl­y in recent news, notably its formal recognitio­n by the United States as a part of Israel. What are the Golan Heights? Why is this territory - not much larger than Rensselaer County - so strategica­lly important? What is its demography and diplomatic history? How does it differ from the West Bank or Gaza? Rosen studied history of the modern Middle East and internatio­nal relations at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He is an active member of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel and has traveled the Golan extensivel­y, including hiking and by horseback last winter. Begun in 2004, B’nai Sholom’s “Synagogue Scholars” series spotlights individual­s in the Capital Region Jewish community who are recognized scholars in their fields. Always in Season takes an unflinchin­g look at the multi-generation­al impact of lynching, connecting the racial violence that persists today to historical lynching terrorism. The film centers on the case of Lennon Lacy, an African American teen who was found hanging from a swing set in Bladenboro, North Carolina, in 2014, and whose mother, Claudia, seeks answers for her son’s death which was quickly ruled a suicide despite inconsiste­ncies in the case.
