BREAKFAST WITH SANTA:

The Saratoga Hilton’s 25th Annual “Breakfast with Santa” is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 24at The Saratoga Hilton; 534Broadwa­y, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. The Saratoga Hilton’s 25th annual “Breakfast with Santa” will take place on Christmas Eve at the hotel. The special anniversar­y event will feature a festive buffet breakfast, fantastic gift raffles and a fun visit from Santa himself. The Capital Area Agricultur­e and Horticultu­re Program and Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension Albany County will be holding winter Farmer Discussion Group meetings in early January 2020. Dayton Maxwell, newly hired CAAHP Farm Business Management Educator will lead a discussion on farm business management in a challengin­g agricultur­al economy. Aaron Gabriel, CAAHP Agronomy Educator, will discuss new and old pests including the soybean cyst nematode, western bean cutworm, and several weeds (tall water

hemp, palmer amaranth, marestail, knapweeds, and bedstraws). These pests create new challenges that require diligent management. There is no charge for the meetings and lunch will be provided. ISRAEL’S GOLAN

HEIGHTS TALK: B’nai Sholom Reform Congregati­on continues its popular “Synagogue Scholars” series with a presentati­on by Ed Rosen of Albany on the topography, demography and strategic importance of the Golan Heights. Rosen will present “Riding Through the History of the Golan” immediatel­y following the congregati­on’s Friday, January 10, Shabbat service that begins at 8 p.m. B’nai Sholom is at 420 Whitehall Road, Albany. The service and program are open to all who wish to worship and learn. The Golan region of Israel has figured prominentl­y in recent news, notably its formal recognitio­n by the United States as a part of Israel. What are the Golan Heights? Why is this territory - not much larger than Rensselaer County - so strategica­lly important? What is its demography and diplomatic history? How does it differ from the West Bank or Gaza? Rosen studied history of the modern Middle East and internatio­nal relations at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He is an active member of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel and has traveled the Golan extensivel­y, including hiking and by horseback last winter. Begun in 2004, B’nai Sholom’s “Synagogue Scholars” series spotlights individual­s in the Capital Region Jewish community who are recognized scholars in their fields. POESTENKIL­L SENIORS:

The Poestenkil­l Seniors hold weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1p.m. at the Sullivan Jones VFW Post in Poestenkil­l. All seniors are welcome. Coffee and refreshmen­ts are served after the meeting, followed by bingo and cards. The hall is handicap accessible, with sufficient parking. The Poestenkil­l Seniors hold catered luncheons, clamsteams and fish fries at the hall and also at various restaurant­s. Best of all they go on bus trips to casinos and other points of interest.

How much farm income do I need to make in order to be able to deduct it on my taxes? What tax related form(s) do I need to complete? What, if any, tax management strategy should I have for my farm business? Should I form an LLC or other form of business, and what tax documentat­ion do lenders require? CAAHP Educators, Steve Hadcock and Dayton Maxwell, will answer these and other tax related questions during this meeting. In addition to discussing income tax concepts, they will explore Agricultur­al Value Assessment, Building Exemptions, Sales Tax Regulation­s and Farmers’ School Tax Credit.
