TROY, N.Y. » A local man has invented a new culinary multi-tool for the kitchen that he calls a “TeableSpoon XL.”

The wooden stirring spoon can measure teaspoons, tablespoons and the hanging hole measures a single serving of spaghetti or linguini. The TeableSpoon can also be used for muddling fruits, herbs and spices.

“It all started one night a few years ago when I was baking and couldn’t find the teaspoons and tablespoons. I thought, ‘ This is ridiculous, why aren’t they just built into something?’” said inventor Sam Wechsler, 34. “A light bulb went off in my head: ‘ Why not put them in a stirring spoon?’”

The TeableSpoon XL is so handy for making Spaghetti, Wechsler laser- etched instructions on how to prepare the meal on the backside of the spoon. That added feature makes TeableSpoon XL an ideal gift for young cooks, like college students away from home for the first time, he said.

Wechsler is looking to raise $3,000 in pledges through the crowdfunding website Kickstarter. Those who pledge $19 or more to the Kickstarter campaign will receive a TeableSpoon XL in the mail by Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020.

“I have lots of ideas for kitchen inventions that will simplify cooking,” Wechsler said. “So when you pledge to my Kickstarter, you’re not just going to become one of the very first TeableSpoon owners. You’re also helping to launch a brand.”

After hand- carving the first TeableSpoon and soliciting feedback, Wechsler machined his TeableSpoon XL prototype on a CNC router in the Tech Valley Center of Gravity Prototyping Center.

“As one of the nation’s earliest industrial centers, Troy, New York has a proud history of invention and manufacturing,” said Dan Falkenstrom, Tech Valley Center of Gravity facilities and manufacturing incubator director. “We’re thrilled to help inventors like Samkeep that tradition alive in the 21st century.”

Falkenstrom said the nonprofit TVCOG prototyping center gives startups, inventors and entrepreneurs affordable access to high- end manufacturing equipment so they can produce professional-quality prototypes locally.

Wechsler recently held a TeableSpoon XL Kickstarter launch party in the Tech Valley Center of Gravity kitchen.

The launch party coincides with TVCOG’s “Social Night,” which is held every Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Members will be using the TeableSpoon to cook their weekly pot luck dinner.
