Local hemp farmer brings CBD to Troy Farmers Market
TROY, N.Y. » A Washington County farm is the first approved vendor of Hemp- derived CBD products at the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market.
Slack Hollow Organics LLC, of Argyle, is now selling its first- ever batch of New Yorkgrown and processed certified organic full- spectrum CBD hemp extract at the winter farmers market held Saturdays in the Troy Atrium in from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We are a family-run farm focused on supplying the Capital Region with a superior locally grown organic CBD product,” Seth Jacobs of Slack Hollow Farm said in a news release.
“We work with an artisanal scale USDA Certified Organic extractor on Long Island. In the CBD world, we’re like a small scale craft brewery. This is high quality, small- batch ‘craft CBD,” Jacobs noted.
Husband- and- wife team Seth Jacobs and Martha Johnson established Slack Hollow Farm in 1985, growing organically certified salad greens, herbs, and vegetables. The local farm and its produce have been a staple at the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market since 2004.
Today, Kalon and Adin Jacobs-Johnson, ages 26 and 18, help their mother and father manage 15-acres of NOFA-NY Certified Organic crops including hemp for hemp- derived CBD products.
CBD stands for Cannabidiol, which is a compound extracted from the hemp plant. Hempderived CBD products contain less than 0.3% THC and do not produce an intoxicating effect.
Because the plant CBD is derived from has been banned for decades, there is relatively little long-term clinical research on it. But users claim CBD can help with a variety of conditions including chronic pain, depression, anxiety, osteoporosis, and glaucoma.
“Millions of people say that CBD is helping them,” Jacobs said.
Currently, Slack Hollow Farm is the only vendor approved to sell hemp- derived CBD products at the Troy market
lack Hollow Hemp Full Spectrum Hemp Extract CBD oil is available in one fluid ounce dropper bottles in concentrations of 300 milligrams for $40, 600 milligrams for $60, 900 milligrams for $75, 1200 milligrams for $115 and 1800 milligrams for $145, with more options coming soon and prices subject to change. Jacobs describes this first batch as having a robust flavor profile.
“I’m glad New York state and the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market have both set very high standards for the manufacture and sale of CBD,” Jacobs remarked.
“Because our state has such strict manufacturing standards, consumers can have confidence in the labeling and purity of any made-in-New York brand CBD,” Jacobs noted.
The true test for Slack Hollow Hemp’s business approach will be connecting directly to customers, but that’s also something the small upstate farm has decades of experience with. For the last 16 years, Slack Hollow has earned a loyal following at the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market, a regional market with national acclaim.
“We know that the future for a small farm like ours is to supply a product to be sold in the local community,” Jacobs said.
“Just as we’ve been growing food for the local community for years, we’re now also growing CBDfor the Capital Region.
We’re going to keep doing what we’ve been doing all along,” Jacobs added.
Most of the retail cost for CBD oil is determined by postharvest handling expenses, Jacobs notes, including the extraction process, laboratory testing for THC and CBD, insurance and compliance. By selling directly to customers at the farmers market or directly to locally- owned stores in the Capital. Region, Jacobs aims to cut out any unnecessary markups from farm to customer.
“When you know your grower, you are supporting a local family and exchanging goods and services in a healthy way,” Jacobs said.
Slack Hollow Hemp certified organic full-spectrum CBD oil is available at the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market, held every Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. year-round and at Honest Weight Co- op in Albany, open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
