Tuesday, June 23, 7– 8:00 pm, Virtual Talk by author Kathryn Atwood, Women Heroes of WWII. The Chapman Museum is pleased to present a virtual talk by author Kathryn J. Atwood by Zoom on Tuesday, June 23, from 7to 8pm. DAM THAT CREEK: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is offering online programs this month that will include a presentation by Derrick Pratt of the Erie Canal Museum. The first will be on Tuesday, June 23rd at 6:30pm as the site will provide an online program titled, “Dam that Creek!” This program will discuss the first dam across the Schoharie Creek for the Erie Canal and how it provided a means for barges to navigate through its waters. Schoharie Crossing is offering this slate of online programs while the Visitor Center is closed during the COVID-19crisis. During NY on PAUSE, the Erie Canal historic site will provide programs through Webex as well as other online programs and social media such as Facebook Live. Additional programs will be scheduled, so please keep in touch with us by joining our mailing list or following online. The site grounds will remain open for appropriate socially distant recreational use from dawn until dusk daily. Please observe NYS Guidelines while visiting Schoharie Crossing. Juan Hinojosa, current exhibiting Art Installation Series artist, will be leading an Advanced Collage Night! Hinojosa will lead participants in making their own collages that combine traditional paper materials with 3D items found around the home, like buttons, costume jewelry, iron-on patches, or even small plastic dinosaurs and legos! Hinojosa will also discuss adhesives for different materials, how to use a rigid support, and how to display a more 3D work. CANAL: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is offering online programs this month that will include a presentation by Derrick Pratt of the Erie Canal Museum. As part of a double-header of online presentations at the end of June, Pratt will provide the program through Webex that will discuss the Erie Canal’s many connections to the earliest days of professional baseball. Using stories from some of the game’s biggest stars and others long forgotten, discover the connection that the canal has to our national past-time. The Poestenkill Seniors hold weekly meetings every Tuesday at 1p.m. at the Sullivan Jones VFW Post in Poestenkill. All seniors are welcome. Coffee and refreshments are served after the meeting, followed by bingo and cards. The hall is handicap accessible, with sufficient parking. NATURALIZATION CEREMONY: CANCELED: In consultation with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Saratoga National Historical Park has cancelled the Naturalization Ceremony, traditionally held on July 4. The popular event draws hundreds of visitors and participants to witness the moving ceremony of citizens taking the oath of allegiance for the first time. The size of the crowd, and nature of the seated event, makes it unsafe to carry out during the COVID-19pandemic. The park’s operational approach while responding to the COVID-19pandemic is to examine each facility function, each service provided, and each special event to ensure those operations comply with current public health guidance and will be regularly monitored. We continue to work closely with the NPS Office of Public Health using CDC guidance to ensure public and workplaces are safe and clean for visitors, employees, partners, and volunteers. As the park anticipates being able to increase visitor access to the park when the Capital Region of New York is cleared to enter Phase 4 of the “New York Forward” plan, park staff will continue to assess the health and safety of operations, and develop new ways for people to explore the park, through self-guided experiences and online activities. HISTORICAL PRESENTATION: The Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hunter and the Fulton County Historical Society are teaming up to present a virtual two program series. On July 8th at 6:30pm, Schoharie Crossing Education Director David Brooks will present “15Miles on the Sacandaga Canal? - The Canal Craze,” discussing the construction and success of the Erie Canal and the subsequent “canal craze” that sparked the idea of a
Great Sacandaga Canal. On July 15th at 6:30pm, Fulton County Historical Society Executive Director Samantha Hall-Saladino will present “Sacandaga Soiree: Tides and Tourism,” exploring the tourism boom on the Great Sacandaga Lake from the 1940s to the present. These programs will be presented virtually via Webex. RIES: A new “Experts Next Door” series of workshops and discussions is being offered by the Saratoga County History Center, located at Brookside in Ballston Spa. The second event of the series will be Kathleen Royka of the Thymely Herb group, who will provide a workshop on gardening with herbs at 7pm on July 9. Skidmore professor, Dr. Tillman Nechtman will follow with a discussion on July 23at 7 pm based on his research on Britain’s use of the ocean as a world power. New York’s role in early 19th century religious revivals will be explored by Dr. Jennifer Dorsey of Siena College on August 27, also at 7pm. This event will be offered to the public over Zoom, to raise funds for the Saratoga County History Center. Tickets for the event are at the Brookside Museum website or Saratoga County Historical Society’s Facebook page.
