VIRTUAL WWII TALK: Tuesday, July 14, 7pm, Chapman Museum Virtual Program

- Dr. Daniel Way: “How the B-29Ended World War II and Saved a Million Lives” - On Tuesday, July 14th, at 7pm Dr. Daniel Way will present a virtual program about his father’s experience in the South Pacific during WWII. Donald Way was a T2technica­l Sergeant in the 949th Aviation Engineers Company of the 20th Air Force under general Curtis LeMay, serving from July 1942to November 1945. He was on Guam for approximat­ely one year making bombing maps for the navigators and bombardier­s of the B-29s. Dr. Way’s talk will feature pictures his father took of the bombers, the aerial photos of bombing targets, actual bombings in progress, Hiroshima before and after the A-bomb and the elaborate maps his unit made for the bombardier­s and navigators. The program is planned in conjunctio­n with the Chapman Museum exhibit, Let’s All Fight: WWII Home Front Posters, and is funded in part by a grant from Humanities New York, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Wednesday, July 15 HISTORICAL PRESENTATI­ON: The Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hunter and the Fulton County Historical Society are teaming up to present a virtual two program series. On July 15th at 6:30pm, Fulton County Historical Society Executive Director Samantha Hall-Saladino will present “Sacandaga Soiree: Tides and Tourism,” exploring the tourism boom on the Great Sacandaga Lake from the 1940s to the present. These programs will be presented virtually via Webex. TOUR: The Saratoga Springs Preservati­on Foundation, in partnershi­p with the Children’s Museum at Saratoga, offers a family friendly tour of Congress Park on Wednesday, July 15th at 10AM. The museum’s motto of “fun is not cancelled” is embodied in this 45-minute walking tour that highlights the history and architectu­re of Congress Park while providing families with a unique, socially distanced outdoor activity. Learn about the history of the springs, Canfield Casino, Spirit of Life & Spencer Trask Memorial, and the carousel. Tour meets at the Congress Spring under the pavilion. SUNDAY STROLL: Sunday, July 19- Historic Fifth & Madison Avenues. The Saratoga Springs Preservati­on Foundation is thrilled to present their summer series of historic walking tours while remaining safe and socially distanced. Summer Sunday Strolls will be offered every Sunday through Sept. 6at 10:30 a.m. in various neighborho­ods throughout the city. Tour topics this season highlight prominent women of Greenridge Cemetery, the celebrated area surroundin­g the Saratoga Race Course, and the historic Spa State Park, among many others. All Sunday morning tours last approximat­ely 90minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. Due to current restrictio­ns in New York State, Summer Strolls will be limited to 20 guests, which currently is less than the maximum of 25that is currently allowed, and tickets must be purchased in advance until otherwise noted. DHARMA MEDITATION: Meditation Classes Led by Pierre Zimmerman of One Roof Saratoga. July 12-August 30, Sundays at 9am on the SPAC grounds in the Saratoga Spa State Park. Dharma Meditation includes inspiratio­nal topics that support emotional, cognitive, and ethical wishes for wellbeing. This is a sitting meditation for 25minutes with a silent break allowing people to stretch, followed by a second sitting, introduced by a brief talk. RIES: A new “Experts Next Door” series of workshops and discussion­s is being offered by the Saratoga County History Center, located at Brookside in Ballston Spa. Skidmore professor, Dr. Tillman Nechtman will lead a discussion on July 23at 7 pm based on his research on Britain’s use of the ocean as a world power. New York’s role in early 19th century religious revivals will be explored by Dr. Jennifer Dorsey of Siena College on August 27, also at 7pm. This event will be offered to the public over Zoom, to raise funds for the Saratoga County History Center. SUNDAY STROLL: Sunday, July 26- The Good Life: North Broadway. The Saratoga Springs Preservati­on Foundation is thrilled to present their summer series of historic walking tours while remaining safe and socially distanced. Summer Sunday Strolls will be offered every Sunday through Sept. 6at 10:30a.m. in various neighborho­ods throughout the city. Tour topics this season highlight prominent women of Greenridge Cemetery, the celebrated area surroundin­g the Saratoga Race Course, and the historic Spa State Park, among many others. MUSEUM GALA: On August 1, 2020, Shaker Museum will hold its first ever virtual Annual Benefit Gala. The theme of this year’s Gala is inclusion and the Museum’s honorees, Lacey Schwartz Delgado and Alan Cumming, are individual­s whose work embodies and promotes inclusion. LIGHTHOUSE TOUR: Join the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservati­on Society (HALPS) as it hosts visits to the eight room lighthouse, a quiet sentinel that has guided navigation on the Hudson River for 146years. Tours of the Historic Hudson-Athens Lighthouse are now available on July 11th, August 8th, September 12th and October 10th as long as the Capital Region enters and stays in Phase 4. Masks will be required to enter, and visitors are required to take proper social distancing precaution­s while on the boat and inside the lighthouse. Visitors will be required to take a covid symptom survey as well. Staff will regularly clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces throughout the day. Tours leave from Henry Hudson Riverfront Park at 11:00, 12:00, 1:00and 2:00. Tours leave from Athens Riverfront Park at 11:30, 12:30, 1:30and 2:30. The tour, including the boat ride, lasts a little over an hour. Except for the last tour of the day, visitors may stay as long as they like as long as we are able to maintain safe social distancing. Adult tickets are $25and Children under 12 are $15(cash only unless ordered online). This includes transporta­tion. Picnic tables are available for those who wish to bring lunch. As visitors arrive at the lighthouse, they climb the metal stairs and enter the interior of the lighthouse where they are welcomed by tour guides or docents. Through video clips, Emily Brunner, will relate factual stories about life on the lighthouse in the 1930s. Emily was the daughter of Emil Brunner, the last civilian lighthouse keeper, who served as keeper from 1930to 1949. The Brunner family lived at the lighthouse during much of the 1930s before moving to Athens. Son Robert, was born on the lighthouse. Until 2015, Emily was often at tours and able to regale visitors with many colorful tales of life on the lighthouse. Sadly, Emily and her brother Bob have recently passed away. The tour gives you the opportunit­y to learn about the important role the Hudson River played in the developmen­t of the Upper Hudson River towns, and how the lighthouse made navigation safe along the river to allow developmen­t to take place.
