TROY, N.Y. » Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, held at the Alamo in South Troy, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This is a valuable service which is provided free of charge to only our Troy residents,” Renee Panetta, Troy Recycling Coordinator said.

“This program provides you an opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous materials that are found in your home. These are materials that are not accepted through either the city or private haulers waste collection,” Panetta explained.

Panetta also described the kinds of waste products being accepted.

“Household hazardous waste includes materials like oil-based paint, aerosols, motor oils, pesticides, chemical cleaners, paint thinners, propane tanks, electronics, f lorescent lighting, and other potentially harmful substances or products,” Panetta noted.

Given the popularity of the program, Panetta added that the city is issuing more coupons for residents wishing to take advantage of the service.

“Due to the popularity of this valuable program, we’ve added additional coupons to ensure that more residents will be able to participate. The deadline to request a coupon is Friday, July 31, at noon,” Panetta said.

“If you have previously issued coupon for the event that was canceled in the spring, you don’t need to request a new one, you will be able to use that for the Aug. 1 event,” Panetta added.

If you have not signed up for a coupon, residents are asked to email Panetta, (Renee. Panetta@ troyny. gov) with a copy of your driver’s license and a city tax bill or utility bill as proof of residency.

If you do not have access to e-mail, you’re asked to mail a copy of your proof of residency and ID to City Hall, 433 River Street, Troy NY, 12180, and address it to the attention of General Services. A coupon will be mailed to you upon receipt (electronic or post) of the required documents.

There are a limited number of coupons available; coupons are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. A coupon is required to participate and will include a designated time slot for the participant.
