Dutch sweep Mohawks in Thursday twin bill

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. » Frankie Pizzo and Andrew Pedone have been waiting all summer for what would happen on Tuesday night. After talking earlier in the week about who would have the advantage amongst the Saint Rose and former Shen teammates, the two were finally able to face off.

The Dutch would end the night with two convincing victories, winning 16- 6 in the first game and 7-1 in the second.

“We’ve been playing well. We came out swinging. It was nice to see that and put a good pitching performance behind it,” said Dutch manager Nick Davey.

The first game had a Saint Rose feel to it, with Pryce Wysula getting the start for the Dutch and Greg Allard following, combining for four innings of work.

The game got away from the Mohawks in the fourth inning when the Dutch put up a crooked eight spot, starting with a booming Chase Carroll double off the center field wall and finishing with a monster three-run home run, off the bat of Brandon Kruzinski.

The Dutch would have the bats out again early in the second game, putting up a four spot in the first. Brandon Kruzinski started off the bottom half with a leadoff double and would score on a groundout. Jake Manderson singled in Devan Kruzinski and scored on a Tristan Nemjo home run.

While the bats were out, the pitching was not to be outshined in game two.

“Kyle was very good tonight,” Davey said of Kyle Canavally, who started the game going three innings of scoreless ball. He struck out 6 batters, giving up 1 hit and 2 walks.

“He’s another fifth year senior, Division 3 kid and is someone that heads their staff at Brockport. You can roll him out there with confidence and he set the tone for us.”

Frankie Pizzo took over in the top of the fourth and that’s when he and Andrew Pedone would get the moment they’ve been waiting for .

“I knew right when I saw him that I was going to have a huge smirk on my face and he had a big grin on his face too. We both have been waiting to face each other in one of these games,” Pizzo said of his former Shenendehowa teammate. The pair graduated in 2016 and now are going into their fifth years of eligibility at Saint Rose.

Pedone has been swinging the bat well the past few games for the Mohawks, including an opposite field solo homer, completed with a bat flip, and sac fly in the first game on Thursday night.

“I was a little nervous. I almost saw him in the previous inning with the bases loaded but Kyle [Canavally] got out of it. I saw him as a lead- off the next inning, so it was a little less nerveracking,” Pizzo said.

Pizzo won the battle, striking out Pedone in the at-bat.

“I definitely did not want to let him get those bragging rights, but either way it was fun just to get to face- off with him.”

Pizzo would pitch two scoreless innings and the game would be closed out by Curtis Buchan, who would only allow an unearned run in the sixth inning.
