REPURPOSING WORKSHOP: Master Gardener and Interior Designer Denise Maurer will be presenting a workshop entitled Repurposing Found Objects Into Garden Art on Tuesday, September 29th at 6PM, via Zoom for the Troy Public Library. Have a lot of odd glass pieces that have been collecting dust? Learn how to make garden totems and flowers for the garden. How about an old lamp base? Wire a moss lined basket to it to transform it into a graceful planter. Discover ways to repurpose found objects into something else. We’ll share inspiration and instruction in this fun class. This will be a five-session program on how to understand Shakespeare’s plays. We will start our discussion with Act 1 of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Coriolanus.” Then in the following four weeks we will discuss the play one act at a time. This program will allow the participants to put the play in a variety of contexts, such as its relationship to his other works and to the modern existential world. Tom Bulger, Shakespeare Scholar and retired professor from Siena College will lead this workshop. Please have Act One read for the September 10th discussion. The Pumpkin Glow & Light Show Drive-Thru is an enchanting Halloween experience that features a pumpkin wonderland with thousands of hand carved illuminated jack o’lanterns. Guests are invited to be immersed in the magic from the safety and comfort of their own vehicle. The Drive-Thru experience boasts single pumpkin carvings to larger than life dazzling light displays. Ellms Family Farm has partnered with master carvers that are bringing all of the Halloween spirit to life. In addition to marveling at the masterpieces created by talented artists, guests will have the opportunity to be able to enjoy all the Ellms Farms fall snacks they know and love, by preselecting and prepaying for tasty fall themed treats, food & beverages, again to be enjoyed from your vehicle. This attraction is open from 7to 10p.m. Sunday through Thursday from Oct. 1to Nov. 8at Ellms Family Farm, located at 448Charlton Rd., Ballston Spa. FIELD OF HORRORS: Local haunted attraction Field of Horrors will open for its Sneak Peek Weekend from 6:30to 11p.m. on Sept. 25 and 26. It will then be open from 6:30to 11p.m. on Oct. 2, 3, 9, 10and 11as well as 6 to 11p.m. on Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24, 25, 30and 31. LOCAL GRAIN ECONOMY: Local Grain Economy - Tour of Philmont Community

Bakery and Hawthorne Valley Bakery. Tuesday, October 6, 2020from 7:00- 8:00 pm. Online, recorded video tour. To demonstrate the local grain economy, Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Albany and Ulster Counties are holding an online tour of Philmont Community Bakery and Hawthorne Valley Bakery on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at 7:00pm EDT. Philmont Community Bakery has a New American Mill and Hawthorne Valley Bakery has a Meadows Mill, which are used for grinding flour from local grain. Grain farmers, and farmers who want to grow grain, will learn about local grain markets and get a look at these two small-scale mills that process grains. Bakers and those who want to start a bakery will see how baking is done on a small-scale and learn why these two bakeries mill a portion of their own flour. We will also take a couple of minutes to explain the 20-C commercial processing license issued from NYS Ag & Markets which is needed for grinding flour and baking. Over the past few years, food grain production in the Northeast has been making a comeback. There is strong interest in local food, and the current pandemic has illustrated the importance of producing food locally to make it accessible. Recently, CCE held an online tour of Ardent Mill in Albany that serves the entire Northeast. This second tour will focus on small-scale regional millers/bakers and farmers, to illustrate what is referred to as the local grain economy. This online tour and discussion will help you understand the challenges and opportunities in the local grain economy.
