As I was enjoying my day off last Thursday, I was actually thrilled to get interrupted by the news that the Troy Police Department arrested someone in connection with the driveby shooting that killed 11-year- old Ayshawn Davis.

To my surprise, city police made a fairly quick arrest. It’s not that I didn’t have faith in the officers, however, I thought it would be harder to solve the crime without video footage.

It was nice to hear Troy Police Chief Brian Owens claim how the community helped them to arrest Jahquay E. Brown, 20, of Cohoes, at his home in Cohoes. Brown was charged with second-degree murder.

It seems like nowadays community members often do not

wish to share details with police officers, so it was nice to hear that community members did to hopefully help bring Ayshawn’s killer to justice.

I started to shake my head when I saw that Jahquay Brown asked the judge to be placed in protective custody while at the Rensselaer County Jail. I’m not advocating for anyone to get beat up in jail or anywhere, but I kind of feel like this guy deserves some tough love for thinking it would be a good idea to shoot into an open street and end up taking an innocent life away, especially a young life.

Ayshawn’s family seemed very thankful that someone was arrested in connection to the shooting and that the shooter was arrested prior to laying Ayshawn to rest.

It was heartbreaking to see Ayshawn’s family have to lay him to rest at such a young age.

I personally know how hard it is to lose someone close to me at a young age after losing my best friend to leukemia at 18 years old.

Someone losing their life at 18 was hard enough to see, so I can’t imagine how Ayshawn’s family and friends are having to grieve with losing an 11-year- old boy.

At least my friend Michael was able to experience a little more memories in life, although everyone wishes that we were able to experience more time with him, so Ayshawn’s family must be devastated to not see him go through middle and high school and for him to become an adult.

It’s too bad that the gun violence throughout the Capital Region keeps happening and that another young life, 17-year- old Tamari Rodriguez, was lost last week in the Collar City to another drive-by shooting. I just wish that people would stop shooting each other since it’s not fair for family members and other loved ones to keep losing people over senseless shootings.
