LOCAL GRAIN ECONOMY: Local Grain Economy - Tour of Philmont Community Bakery and Hawthorne Valley Bakery. Tuesday, October 6, 2020from 7:00- 8:00 pm. Online, recorded video tour. To demonstrate the local grain economy, Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Albany and Ulster Counties are holding an online tour of Philmont Community Bakery and Hawthorne Valley Bakery on Tuesday, October 6, 2020at 7:00pm EDT. Philmont Community Bakery has a New American Mill and Hawthorne Valley Bakery has a Meadows Mill, which are used for grinding flour from local grain. Grain farmers, and farmers who want to grow grain, will learn about local grain markets and get a look at these two small-scale mills that process grains. Bakers and those who want to start a bakery will see how baking is done on a smallscale and learn why these two bakeries mill a portion of their own flour. We will also take a couple of minutes to explain the 20-C commercial processing license issued from NYS Ag & Markets which is needed for grinding flour and baking. Over the past few years, food grain production in the Northeast has been making a comeback. There is strong interest in local food, and the current pandemic has illustrated the importance of producing food locally to make it accessible. Recently, CCE held an online tour of Ardent Mill in Albany that serves the entire Northeast. This second tour will focus on small-scale regional millers/bakers and farmers, to illustrate what is referred to as the local grain economy. This online tour and discussion will help you understand the challenges and opportunities in the local grain economy. Register online ($5) at https://tinyurl.com/OnlineBakeryTour to receive an internet link to the meeting. For those new to Zoom online meetings, a practice session will be held at 6pm. For program questions contact Aaron Gabriel (CCE – Capital Area Agriculture and Horticulture Program), 518-3801496, adg12@cornell.edu or Christian Malsatski (CCE – Ulster), 845-340-3990, cpm78@cornell.edu. CAR SHOW: CANCELED - The Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association (BSBPA) has announced that the 18th Annual “The Way We Were” Car Show, originally scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 11, 2020in Ballston Spa, has been cancelled due to coronavirus concerns and restrictions on mass gatherings in New York State. As one of the most popular judged car shows in the Capital Region, the event is also a major fundraiser for the BSBPA, drawing more than 400car entries each year and hundreds of spectators to the village’s historic downtown. In the meantime, to celebrate and showcase the many fine classic and custom vehicles that would normally line Front Street in the village, the BSBPA is setting up a “The Way It Is” Virtual Car Show Facebook Event and inviting participants to submit photos of the vehicles they would have brought to this year’s show, along with their name and the make, model and year. An entry form for submissions can be found at www.ballston.org. There is no cost to enter. Please submit vehicles no later than October 5. We will be promoting the page and encouraging folks to “like” their favorite vehicles, so we invite you to share the page and tell friends to visit and vote. We will announce a “People’s Choice” winner for the vehicle photo that has the most “likes” as of October 11. The winner will receive a Ballston Spa gift certificate, good at many local shops, restaurants and services, and a “The Way It Is” T-shirt. We plan to also offer t-shirts for sale with “The Way It Is” logo for those who like to have a shirt for each year. Proceeds will help support the BSBPA’s community efforts and activities. The next car show will be held on October 10, 2021. For more information, visit www.ballston.org.

ONLINE FILM DISCUSSION: Saratoga Jewish Community Arts and Temple Sinai, with a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, presents a Zoom discussion October 15at 7 p.m. for the film Orchestra of Exiles, the little- known story of Jewish musicians who were transported to Palestine in the 1930s when Nazism was escalating in power. Participants should watch the film prior to the Zoom discussion. Orchestra of Exiles is available on Amazon Prime Video, Fandor, Epix, DIRECTV, Hoopla, and Fandor Amazon Channel. It is available to rent from Apple iTunes for $3.99. Orchestra of Exiles, a 2012 documentary, written, produced, and directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Josh Aronson, tells this well-hidden saga. It is the tale of the founding in 1936of what would become the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and how its founder Bronislaw Huberman ( 1882– 1947), a Polish-Jewish violin prodigy, saved more than 1,000Jews (many claim more like 3,000when parents, wives, and others were swept along) in the process. History may be full of inventive people turning unexpected hardship into great success, but not many can claim that they responded to the rise of a dictatorial state by creating a national arts institution halfway around the world. Contact Phyllis Wang at sjca.sjcf@gmail.com to register and receive the Zoom meeting link and meeting ID.
