COHOES, N.Y. » The Cohoes Common Council is scheduled to vote on a proposal by Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler to impose an assessment on the gross receipts of any commercial hazardous waste facility located in the city. A vote is scheduled for the Dec. 22 Council meeting.

“New York State Environmental Conservation Law Section 270925 was specifically enacted to compensate a host community for the existence of these hazardous waste facilities. I’m asking the Common Council to pass the local law so our community receives these funds we are entitled to,” Keeler stated.

Keeler’s proposal would impose an annual assessment of 4% of the gross receipts of any hazardous waste facility lo

cated in the city of Cohoes. Gross receipts are all income from the onsite disposal and/or treatment of hazardous waste, as defined in New York State Law. Norlite LLC, would be subject to this assessment.

The Common Council discussed the proposed assessment at its Dec. 8 Workshop, including hearing comments on the proposal from the public.

The Common Council’s Dec. 22 meeting will be virtual, via Go-ToM-eeting, to help prevent the further spread of COVID-19. The meeting will begin with an opportunity for public comment.
