Capital District YMCA receives historic support
The Capital District YMCA announced a historic gift from American novelist and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
This gift will address the critical needs of the community involving youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Capital District YMCA is one of 384 nonprofits across the country and the world to receive substantial support from Scott.
“Ms. Scott’s recognition of our efforts to address critical challenges involving racial equality, social justice, food insecurity, childcare, and so much more, her donation of $10 million dollars, is extraordinary,” Capital District YMCA President and CEO David Brown, noted.
In her announcement to the public, Scott explained that she sought to support “people suffering the economic effects of the [COVID-19] crisis” and targeted organizations with “strong leadership teams and results, with special attention to those operating in communities facing high projected food insecurity, high measures of racial inequity, high local poverty rates, and low access to philanthropic capital.”
As an anchor in the Capital District community, the Capital District YMCA works every day to be an anti-racist multicultural organization that intentionally supports diverse and inclusive cultures that positively impact and strengthen the foundations of this community.
As a leading nonprofit, the Y depends on donors, membership dues and program fees to operate. With the many challenges that 2020 has presented to this community and the Capital District YMCA, this gift will help the Y maintain their organization as they continue to provide critical services to the Capital District.
The Y continues to rely on annual donors to help the community access critical Y services.
