Experts Next Door series to continue on Thursday
Saratoga County History Center’s popular virtual Experts Next Door series continues in 2021 with a varied line-up, putting Saratoga residents in dialogue with local and national celebrities.
In the first event of the new year, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14, internationally- acclaimed scholar and social justice activist Dr. James Brewer Stewart will talk about how history and education can be used to fight racism, slavery and injustice today. His talk is titled “Connecting Classroom to Community” will challenge the audience to think differently about American society and politics.
Dr. Stewart is professor of history emeritus at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., founder of Historians Against Slavery and the Celebrate American Heroes Project, and has just launched a national campaign to combat white supremacy.
At 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12, the center will present “A Virtual Chocolate House” with Paul Supley, proprietor of the Van Wyckes 18th Century Chocolate Haus. Supley will explore the rich (and delicious) history of chocolate in the 18th Century. Participants will receive information about how to create their own mouth-watering concoctions prior to the event.
Thus, they can sip their creations while enjoying an engaging presentation on the social history of chocolate from the comfort of their own homes.
Next, participants can Get ready for St. Patrick’s Day at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 11 with an evening of craft cocktails. The celebrated team of mixologists at Hamlet & Ghost in Saratoga Springs will take guests on a tasty trip through cocktail history, share their experiences serving the Saratoga community and offer tips on home bartending.
Like the Chocolate House event, registrants will receive a list of ingredients to have on hand so they can mix distinctive and delectable drinks in real time with the best bartenders in town.
Each event requires pre-registration, which is available online at www.brooksidemuseum.org. The events are free for SCHC members and $5 for non-members.
