ALBANY, N.Y. » The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital Area (BGCCA) in partnership with Troy Housing Authority recently started a boxing program called the Next Bunch Boxing Program at Griswold Heights. This boxing program is led by local legend and coach Sam Bunch in a large gym space.

“We are very pleased to be collaborating with the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Region to provide quality programs to the children, youth and families at the Troy Housing Authority. The Next Bunch Boxing Program provides a unique way for participants to develop confidence, selfesteem and character. It is one of many great services brought to us by the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Region,” said Deborah Witkowski, executive director, Troy Housing Authority.

This activity is a great way for children to build community and push their limits in a positive way. In fact, 2019 junior Olympic gold medalist and Troy native, Jadah Robinson now trains and instructs in this space as well.

“Coming back to Troy again allows me to nurture the genius in each youth,” said Bunch. “The Next Bunch boxing program’s purpose is to show our youth we care. We represent three things: 1) Determination, 2) Dedication, 3) Delivery. Boxing will always produce mental stability. I’m teaching our youth to counterattack defeat and opposition. Boxing opens up the doors of opportunity!”

“Greatness is accomplished by overcoming your weaknesses. Boxing teaches me the discipline to overcome defeat,” added Robinson. “Pain is just weakness leaving the body. I teach my skills to other youth as my Uncle Sam Bunch instructs me. It’s amazing teaching other youth how to become champions. I love boxing. I love my craft, and I love teaching it.”

If you want more information about enrollment, contact Tim Pratt at tpratt@bgccapitalarea.org.

Organizers note that we the group still in need of more equipment (specifically gloves) and donations toward a new boxing ring. All donations are appreciated and cherished.

The Next Bunch Boxing Program is held Monday-Friday, 4-7 p.m., at the Griswold Heights Apartments at 350 Griswold Heights in Troy.
