HISTORY TALK: On Tuesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. Michael Barrett, Executive Director of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway will discuss Troy and the Draft Riots of 1863 for the Troy Public Library. While the city of Troy was a bustling industrial center during the Civil War period, the lives of her workers reflected the same social, financial and emotional upheaval that had torn the nation apart. Local economic and political disparity had led to the early and successful organization of labor, and related political affiliations. These factors were compounded by the enactment of the first military conscription act in American history, which included provisions that many considered to be onerously weighted against the laboring class. This turmoil led to what has been called the second most destructive draft riot in the nation, necessitating some rather unusual governmental responses. This slideillustrated lecture is a true story about the people and events that don’t always make it into the history books. This program will be conducted via zoom. VIRTUAL HORSE SYMPOSIUM: CCE Equine, a division of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County, is gearing up to host ist second Virtual Horse Symposium in March. This three-week program is offered for adult horse owners, business owners, and horse enthusiasts in the Capital Region and beyond. This year, classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday for three weeks starting March 16 and ending April 1. Topics include: Sound Development of Young Horses, An introduction to Liability Risks: New York’s Agricultural Tourism Act and Negligence in the Horse Industry, Equine Law:

Legal Issues for Participants in the Horse Industry, and more. Each session will be hosted virtually at 7 p.m. via Zoom. In addition to the virtual classes, there will be an option for participants to receive educational packets with resources for each presentation. New this year, the event will include a Family Fun Equine Trivia Night on April 2 that promises to be a fun and educational experience. Anyone can join this interactive virtual event. Attendees also have the option to purchase a handcrafted charcuterie box that can be picked up locally in Ballston Spa. UNDERSTANDING SHAKESPEARE: Join us at the Troy Public Library on Thursdays, February 18th – March 18th from 6:30 – 7:30PM for our Understanding Shakespeare workshop. This will be a five-session program on how to understand Shakespeare’s plays. We will start our discussion with Act 1 of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet.” Then in the following four weeks we will discuss the play one act at a time. This program will allow the participants to put the play in a variety of contexts, such as its relationship to his other works and to the modern existential world. Tom Bulger, Shakespeare Scholar and retired professor from Siena College, will lead this workshop. Please have Act One read for the February 18th discussion. HISTORY AT HOME: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is excited to announce its 2021 Virtual “History at Home” Winter Lecture series. The site will offer free online programs from January to March covering a range of interesting history topics. Links for the programs can be found on Schoharie Crossings NYS Parks webpage, on their Facebook, or by contacting the site. To wrap up the series, Audrey Humphrey from Johnson Hall State Historic Site will present an exploration of Sir William Johnson and his connection to Fort Hunter on March 18th. Johnson was one of the largest landowners in New York by the mid-18th century and his influence in the Mohawk Valley is evident even to this day. As Superintendent of Indian Affairs, his connection to the Mohawk village of Tionondoroge and congregation at Queen Anne’s Chapel influenced the how the American Revolution played out in New York after his death in 1774. All the programs will begin at 6:30pm and are offered for free via the online platform, WebEx. The links for these programs go live at 6:20pm. THE MARKETPLACE: To help support local business and vendors, Make It Up State and the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market partnered to launch The Marketplace, a Sunday marketplace that features local handmade goods and food. Running every Sunday through March 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m in the former Price Chopper in Lansingburgh (865 2nd Avenue, Troy NY), currently the winter home of the Saturday Troy Waterfront Farmers Market. The event will follow all of the COVID safety procedures and regulations that the farmers market has enacted since the beginning of New York On Pause, including required wearing of masks by all in attendance, socially distanced shopping and vending, and regulated occupancy.
