TROY, N.Y. » Spring is almost here, which means many things for Capital Region residents. For the Troy community, it means the annual return of a local favorite: The Snowman is open for the season.

Celebrating its 68th season, the ice cream shop opened for business Saturday at noon.

The menu is full of favorite flavors and treats. Guests are asked to wear masks at all times and maintain social distancing while in line. There are yellow lines on the pavement at six foot intervals to show customers where to stand.

Owner John Murphy is happy to be open for business again, and is looking forward to another good season.

“We’re happy to be open.”

The community is happy The Snowman is open, too. It was announced that the ice cream stand would open at noon, and by 11:45 long lines had formed at both windows. Murphy got things going early, and soon happy customers were walking away carrying cones and dishes full of ice cream.

“If it was healthy, I would eat it every day,” commented Shantenjiah Jones-Williams, who came to The Snowman with members of her family.

“I like the smell,” said Ty’ejiah Jones-Williams. “When you go up to the window, you can smell the fresh ice cream.”

“They live here!” joked Shanti Davis, a cousin of the family.

“I like how they have a lot of flavors,” added Iyanna Ford.

Those flavors include options for a variety of diets, including vegan and dairy-free choices. If you’re counting calories, you can try their Only8 frozen yogurt flavors, so named because it’s made with only eight ingredients.
