SHORT STORY CAFE: Short Story Reading and Discussion Group - On Wednesdays, February 24th – April 7th at 6PM (no meeting March 31st), Short Story writer David Sylvester will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library. Local short-story writer Dave Sylvester hosts The Short Story Café, an informal discussion of the short story form that examines how writers handle structural elements such as plot, character and theme in their writing. Each week we will read and discuss two stories by well-known (and some lesser-known!) masters of the form. Copies of the stories will be available in advance and should be read before the discussion­s. This program will be presented using Zoom. Joining the presentati­on will require the installati­on of the Zoom client on your computer (microphone and speakers required for audio, camera for video) or the Zoom app on your mobile device. SMALL RUMINANT PARASITE CONTROL COURSE:

Parasites are the most important limiting factor in small ruminant flocks. Join the CAAHP team and Ashley Pierce to learn how to monitor, treat, and prevent parasites in your flock, herd, or flerd! This meeting will take place on March 25, 2021 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. via Zoom. This online course will discuss the lifecycle and biology of parasites affecting small ruminants, how to use the 5-point check, FAMACHA, and fecal testing to monitor your flock health and provide best practice procedures for treating your animals with de-wormers to avoid parasite resistance. This course is part of a statewide grant from the New York Farm Viability Institute that provides methods and materials to local County Extension offices to teach and host parasite mitigation strategies. Once you have taken the course and learned the basic techniques, you may gain access to the lab materials on-site at the Extension office and work with your local educators to complete your own samples. We are hoping to have the lab open for at least one day each month during the growing season for producers to run their own samples, catch up with their local educators and growers, and access the latest strategies for protecting your animals. In honor of National Potato Chip Day - Sunday, March 14th - the Saratoga Springs Preservati­on Foundation will welcome renowned potato chip historian, Alan Richer, for a virtual program. “Take a Bite Out of History: From Saratoga Chip to Potato Chip” will take place on Thursday, March 25 at 7PM. This three-week program is offered for adult horse owners, business owners, and horse enthusiast­s in the Capital Region and beyond. This year, classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday for three weeks starting March 16 and ending April 1. Topics include: Sound Developmen­t of Young Horses, An introducti­on to Liability Risks: New York’s Agricultur­al Tourism Act and Negligence in the Horse Industry, Equine Law: Legal Issues for Participan­ts in the Horse Industry, and more. Each session will be hosted virtually at 7 p.m. via Zoom. CLIMATE CHANGE TALK:

The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County will host a virtual conversati­on with Congressma­n Paul Tonko and a panel of student activists on Climate Change: Solutions from

the National to Local Level. The event will be held on Wednesday, March 31st from 6:45 to 8:30 and will be moderated by Professor Anne Ernst, Environmen­tal Studies and Sciences at Skidmore College. Congressma­n Paul Tonko will discuss the actions and goals of the federal government in regard to climate change in the current administra­tion, followed by a panel of youth activists discussing local initiative­s. Thursday, April 1 CITY COUNCIL MEETING:

Troy City Council meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. They typically take place in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 433 River St, Troy, but are currently being held virtually via Zoom. Committee meetings are scheduled on a regular basis. Agendas and minutes for meetings are posted on the city’s website. All meetings are open to the public. At monthly regular meetings, Troy residents can discuss any issue related to the City of Troy. The Capital Area Agricultur­e & Horticultu­re Program and CCE Albany County are pleased to announce an upcoming event, What Rental Rate Should I Charge for My Land? This online meeting will be held on April 1, 2021 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM via Zoom. Do you own land that you rent to farmers? Are you a farmer who rents land for your farm business? A one-night virtual meeting for rural farmland owners who are lessors and farmers who are lessees will offer informatio­n about how to establish farm rental rates. With a better understand­ing of how farm rental rates are establishe­d, both lessors and lessees will be satisfied and have a lower risk of misunderst­anding farmland rental agreements. Dayton Maxwell, Nicole Tommell and Steve Hadcock will share informatio­n from a farm rental rate survey that has been conducted in the six counties the CAAHP team covers. The presenters will also share various ways for lessors to determine a farm rental rate for the property they wish to rent. The price of this event is $20 per family. RACE IN AMERICA: At6 p.m. on Tuesdays April 6, April 20, May 4, May 18, June 1 and June 15, Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns will lead a Race in America: A Reading and Discussion Group through the Troy Public Library. This reading and discussion series will explore the inception, inculcatio­n, and function of race in American society. We will discuss this topic in order to improve our understand­ing of systematic, and social, inclusion and exclusion in American systems. Our goal is to tease out the implicit ways race serves as a real, and imagined, force in the lives of all Americans. This group will explore racial dynamics in America, expanding beyond the black-white binary and our understand­ing of race, and develop a deeper understand­ing of the interlocki­ng forces of systemic racism. This group will be led by Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns, Professor of Africana Studies at SUNY Albany. Copies of the books will be available after March 1st. The first book the group will read is Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-First Century by Dorothy Roberts Please have this book read for the April 6th meeting. SHORT STORY CAFE: Short Story Reading and Discussion Group - On Wednesdays, February 24th – April 7th at 6PM (no meeting March 31st), Short Story writer David Sylvester will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library. Local shortstory writer Dave Sylvester hosts The Short Story Café, an informal discussion of the short story form that examines how writers handle structural elements such as plot, character and theme in their writing. Each week we will read and discuss two stories by well-known (and some lesser-known!) masters of the form. Copies of the stories will be available in advance and should be read before the discussion­s. This program will be presented using Zoom. “The General” Virtual Silent Film Event - On Friday, April 8th, 7:00 - 9:00 pm the Troy Public Library will be hosting a virtual screening of the Buster Keaton classic adventure-comedy, ‘The General’ with an original score composed and performed by Ryan Devine. There will be a Q & A session following the film where Ryan Devine will discuss the process of setting this classic film to music. This free event is made possible with funds from the Decentrali­zation Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislatur­e and administer­ed by The Arts Center of the Capital Region.
