This year, classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday for three weeks starting March 16and ending April 1. CLIMATE CHANGE TALK:
The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County will host a virtual conversation with Congressman Paul Tonko and a panel of student activists on Climate Change: Solutions from the National to Local Level. The event will be held on Wednesday, March 31st from 6:45 to 8:30 and will be moderated by Professor Anne Ernst, Environmental Studies and Sciences at Skidmore College. Congressman Paul Tonko will discuss the actions and goals of the federal government in regard to climate change in the current administration, followed by a panel of youth activists discussing local initiatives. This online presentation is open to the public via Zoom is cosponsored by the League of Women Voters and Sustainable Saratoga. Thursday, April 1 CITY COUNCIL MEETING:
Troy City Council meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month at 7p.m. They typically take place in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 433River St, Troy, but are currently being held virtually via Zoom. Committee meetings are scheduled on a regular basis. Agendas and minutes for meetings are posted on the city’s website. All meetings are open to the public. At monthly regular meetings, Troy residents can discuss any issue related to the City of Troy. CCE PROGRAM: The Capital Area Agriculture & Horticulture Program and CCE Albany County are pleased to announce an upcoming event, What Rental Rate Should I Charge for My Land? This online meeting will be held on April 1, 2021 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM via Zoom. Do you own land that you rent to farmers? Are you a farmer who rents land for your farm business? A one-night virtual meeting for rural farmland owners who are lessors and farmers who are lessees will offer information about how to establish farm rental rates. With a better understanding of how farm rental rates are established, both lessors and lessees will be satisfied and have a lower risk of misunderstanding farmland rental agreements. Dayton Maxwell, Nicole Tommell and Steve Hadcock will share information from a farm rental rate survey that has been conducted in the six counties the CAAHP team covers. The presenters will also share various ways for lessors to determine a farm rental rate for the property they wish to rent. The price of this event is $20per family. At6 p.m. on Tuesdays April 6, April 20, May 4, May 18, June 1 and June 15, Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns will lead a Race in America: A Reading and Discussion Group through the Troy Public Library. This reading and discussion series will explore the inception, inculcation, and function of race in American society. We will discuss this topic in order to improve our understanding of systematic, and social, inclusion and exclusion in American systems. Our goal is to tease out the implicit ways race serves as a real, and imagined, force in the lives of all Americans. This group will explore racial dynamics in America, expanding beyond the black-white binary and our understanding of race, and develop a deeper understanding of the interlocking forces of systemic racism. This group will be led by Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns, Professor of Africana Studies at SUNY Albany. Copies of the books will be available after March 1st. The first book the group will read is Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-First Century by Dorothy Roberts Please have this book read for the April 6th meeting. This program is supported by Humanities New York. Humanities New York is a private, non-profit organization that helps all New Yorkers to lead vibrant intellectual lives by strengthening traditions of cultural literacy, critical inquiry, and civic participation. SHORT STORY CAFE:
Short Story Reading and Discussion Group - On Wednesdays, February 24th – April 7th at 6PM (no meeting March 31st), Short Story writer David Sylvester will lead a reading and discussion group at the Troy Public Library. Local shortstory writer Dave Sylvester hosts The Short Story Café, an informal discussion of the short story form that examines how writers handle structural elements such as plot, character and theme in their writing. Each week we will read and discuss two stories by well-known (and some lesser-known!) masters of the form. On Tuesday April 20th The Rochmon Record Club will meet to listen and learn about Hall and Oates – Greatest Hits Part 1“All Killer, No Filler”. Daryl Hall and John Oates are one of the most successful writing duos in music history. In a not surprisingly easy playlist to curate, Rochmon will play, show pictures, and tell stories about 11of Daryl Hall and John Oates’ Top 40 Hits from 1973, with “She’s Gone”, to 1980, with “Kiss On My List” and “You Make My Dreams”. Hall and Oates provided an amazing soundtrack that was ever present on Radio and MTV! There will be trivia! A Rochmon Record Club Listening Party is meant to inform and deepen our understanding of the history of the individual performers, songs and the stories that went into the making of this classic album. Lansingburgh Historical Society will host a very popular historical walking tour again, as requested by many. The tour will be given by Michael Barrett at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 24, 2021. Lansingburgh pre-dates Troy with the settlement starting before 1740and the founding of Abraham Lansing’s village “New City” in 1771. Several pre-revolutionary buildings are still standing including the Revolutionary War Hospital. At6 p.m. on Tuesdays April 6, April 20, May 4, May 18, June 1 and June 15, Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns will lead a Race in America: A Reading and Discussion Group through the Troy Public Library. This reading and discussion series will explore the inception, inculcation, and function of race in American society. We will discuss this topic in order to improve our understanding of systematic, and social, inclusion and exclusion in American systems. Our goal is to tease out the implicit ways race serves as a real, and imagined, force in the lives of all Americans. This group will explore racial dynamics in America, expanding beyond the black-white binary and our understanding of race, and develop a deeper understanding of the interlocking forces of systemic racism. This group will be led by Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns, Professor of Africana Studies at SUNY Albany. Copies of the books will be available after March 1st. The first book the group will read is Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-First Century by Dorothy Roberts Please have this book read for the April 6th meeting. This program is supported by Humanities New York. Humanities New York is a private, non-profit organization that helps all New Yorkers to lead vibrant intellectual lives by strengthening traditions of cultural literacy, critical inquiry, and civic participation. To celebrate the completion of the new Horse Arena the Washington County Fairgrounds will be kicking off the 2021season with a Horse Tack Swap Meet on Saturday, May 8th, 2021 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Many have spent 2020organizing barns, attics, and basements, now take the final step and get rid of all of your gently used horse-related tack and equipment! Businesses and Non-Profits with equine-related business and services are welcome to apply for booth space as well. Booth Spaces are $10.00for a 10x10booth - set up a table or bring your horse trailer or truck to display your items for sale. Saturday, June 5 RUN FOR WOMEN:
POSTPONED - Officials at the Freihofer’s Run for Women (FRW) today announced that the event’s 43rd edition, which was originally set for Saturday, June 5, has been moved to Saturday, Sept. 25in downtown Albany. The event will feature an in-person 5K, Junior 3K and Kids’ Run featuring CDC- and New York statemandated safety measures. Virtual options will also be offered for both the 5K and Junior 3K. Registration for the event will open late spring at freihofersrun.com. With the Run for Women pushed off until later this year, organizers plan to shift the start of the event’s popular Training Challenge from Monday, March 22 to Monday, July 12. The program is an 11-week program for runners of all abilities. It follows a beginner’s 5K training plan and features small groups led by mentors, as well as a virtual option.
