ALBANY, NY » On Friday morning at Wolferts Roost Country Club, the Saratoga and Shaker golf teams kicked their seasons off, with the Saratoga boys and girls each picking up wins.

“We definitely got a lot more work to do. We lost a great senior class from last year and we knew we all had to play well collectively and that’s what we did,” said Jack Thompson, a newcomer to the Blue Streaks golf team. “I’m very happy with what we did today.”

The Saratoga boys won by a collective score of 240-244, narrowly beating the Blue Bison by four strokes. The Saratoga girls won by a bit of a wider margin, taking their season opener 138-149.

Even though they took the loss, Shaker held the lowscore of the day for each the boys and girls matches.

Kieran Cummins shot a 34, one-under par on the frontnine at Wolferts Roost. Emily Bette shot a 42 for the best

score on the girls side.

“It’s exciting and it give me good hopes for the season and I just have to work on improving,” Bette said on having the top score of the day. “Obviously there’s a lot of room for improvement, there always is in the game of golf. I was just hoping to come in and put up a solid number and I think I did that.”

On the boys side, the top six scores from each team were counted.

For Saratoga, those top six were Carter Sica, Kellen Dean 38, Declan Ladd 40, Devin Kim 40, Charlie Blake 42, and Jack Thompson 43 — totaling 240.

For Shaker, their top six were Kieran Cummins 34, Chris McGarvey 38, Ryan Murphy 39, Jack Hoblock 44, Ted David 44 and Jack Montalto 45 — totaling 244.

The top three girls from each team had their scores count towards the final total. Maria Jackson 43, Cammy Porter 47 and Alexa Cate 48 had the top scores for the Blue Streaks — totaling 138.

Bette’s 42, along with Peyton Hoblock at 53 and Claire Cunningham at 54, put Shaker at a total of 149.

Bette is a three-year veteran of the Blue Bison’s varsity team and is excited to be back out on the course — this year actually getting to start at the normal time in August.

“The weather is always really nice for golf in August and I’m happy to be back out here,” she said. “All the girls from other schools are super nice and encouraging and it’s just a great atmosphere out on the course.”

“I worked on my game quite a lot this summer, trying to get out as much as I can, to get ready.”
