Board of Elections establishes new early voting site at Troy Atrium

- By Record staff

Friday, Sept. 3, marked the deadline for the Rensselaer County Board of Elections (BOE) to establish a new early voting polling site for the county. On its site, the BOE added a new early voting site at the Troy Atrium, 4 3rd St., in downtown Troy.

The new site results from a successful lawsuit filed by New York State Attorney General Letitia James on behalf of a coalition of community organizations that worked together during the past two-plus years to make early voting equitable and accessible to all County voters, particularly minority and low-income voters who rely on public transportation and who live in the most population-dense part of the County in the City of Troy.

The new site gives county residents a fourth early voting site option, along with the Town of Brunswick Office Building 336 Town Office Rd, Troy, Schodack Town Hall 265 Schuurman Rd, Castleton, and the Ned Pattison Government Center (County Office Building) 1600 7th Ave.

Upon hearing the news of the new early voting site, Troy NAACP President, Renee Powell, released the following statement.

“The NAACP Troy Branch is pleased with the new early voting site in downtown Troy that the Rensselaer County Board of Elections Commissioners have chosen at The Atrium. The voters of the community are going to be better served by this decision because of the convenience this site provides to all. We wish to thank Attorney General James and her staff and the community organizations that came together to advocate for equitable access to early voting for all,” Powell stated.

League of Women Voters of Rensselaer County Board Member, Noreen McKee, echoed Powell’s sentiments.

“We are absolutely delighted with this decision by the Board of Elections to place an early voting site at The Atrium in Troy that will provide equal access to the ballot box for all County voters,” McKee said.

“It was a hard-fought battle over two years and we wish to thank the Attorney General for bringing a lawsuit on our behalf to preserve and protect voting rights for all New Yorkers,” McKee added.

Early Voting for the General Election runs from Oct. 23 through Oct. 31. Polls are open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday and Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
