- By Record staff

Rensselaer County, the City of Troy, and the Town of Bethlehem, will be partnering on an inter-county Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposal program for 2022. The program will consist of six events.

These events, scheduled throughout the second half of the year, will provide residents of the participating municipalities the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials not accepted through normal garbage collection service.

The first event will be Saturday, June 11th, at the Troy Resource Management Facility (Alamo) in Troy (3000 Main St).

Participating Municipalities for the June 11 event:

The disposal event is a free service available to residents of the participating municipalities only. Advanced registration is required; residents who have not pre-registered will be unable to utilize the program. Residents must visit their participating municipality’s website to register. After the completion of the June 11 event, information for the next Household Hazardous Waste event will be made available through press releases posted on participating municipality’s websites. Troy residents can download the “Cleanup Troy” mobile app to receive notifications on upcoming HHW programs at www.troyny.gov/ recycling.

HHW events will not be collecting electronics, tires, or shredding. These items will be collected at separate events, where offered by specific municipalities.

Business owners wanting to dispose of hazardous waste may set up an appointment in advance with the vendor. There will be fees associated with the disposal of these materials, which will be the sole responsibility of the business owner. To arrange an appointment and be connected with the vendor, contact the appropriate municipal liaison.

“These events are great examples of local governments coming together to offer a safe and convenient way for residents to safely dispose of household hazardous waste. Scheduling several events means it is easier for residents to access and dispose of these items in an environmentally-friendly manner. We expect the Troy event will have an enthusiastic response and look forward to a successful start to an important series of events to safely dispose of these items and waste,” Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin said.

“The disposal of hazardous waste has been an issue for many residents and communities throughout Rensselaer County. The cost of environmentally compliant disposal has been a barrier for many localities. We believe that this partnership will help with those costs, and we encourage Rensselaer County residents in these municipalities to participate in the program,” Chairwoman of the Rensselaer County Legislature Kelly Hoffman remarked.

“We are excited to partner with Rensselaer County and the Town of Bethlehem to expand the availability of household hazardous waste collection this year. These popular free disposal events help Collar City residents and families safely dispose of harmful chemicals and products from their homes while reducing their environmental impact by keeping toxic and hazardous materials out of local landfills. I encourage Troy residents to register for this valuable program during the 2022 collection events,” Troy Mayor Patrick Madden opined.

“Residents of North Greenbush are environmentally conscious and want to preserve our beautiful surroundings. We are thrilled to be able to provide our residents with a safe and proper way to dispose of their house-

hold hazardous wastes. I encourage residents to register early, as space is very limited,” North Greenbush Supervisor Joe Bott commented.

“We are working hard for a cleaner and greener Rensselaer. Providing our residents with a safe way to properly get rid of paint cans, household chemicals, and other hazardous wastes will keep them out of our trash and out of our landfill. Please register early. Space is limited,” Rensselaer Mayor Michael Stammel noted.

“We are pleased to offer safe, free opportunities for Bethlehem residents to properly dispose of toxic household materials, as it will help keep our neighborhoods, our waterways, and our residents and Highway workers safe. I’m happy to have Bethlehem working in partnership with the City of Troy and Rensselaer County to deliver this important service at a lower cost to taxpayers,” Town of Bethlehem Supervisor David VanLuven added.
