NORTH GREENBUSH, N.Y. » On Friday, May 13, North Greenbush police arrested Corey McDaniel, 37, of Troy, following a months-long investigation into a stolen debit card.

In that case, the victim reported on Jan. 23, 2022, that they had accidentally left their debit card in the kiosk at Hoffman’s Car Wash in town the day before but hadn’t realized it right away. The victim checked their bank account and saw fraudulent purchases made, both online and at local establishments, over the course of the two days.

The card was used at that very Hoffman’s Car Wash and a gas station in Cohoes. It was also used to make PayPal and eBay purchases. In total, $1,359 worth of fraudulent purchases were made by the suspect.

McDaniel turned himself in on an arrest warrant and was charged with two counts of felony fourthdegree grand larceny, felony second-degree identity theft, two counts of felony first-degree falsifying business records, misdemeanor petit larceny, misdemeanor attempted petit larceny, misdemeanor third-degree identity theft, and two counts misdemeanor third-degree unlawful possession of personal identifying information.

“This is, unfortunately, a common scenario these days,” North Greenbush Police Chief David M. Keevern said in a news release.

“These are labor-intensive investigations as much of the evidence needed takes time to develop. Officer Peasley and Detective Stehr did an outstanding job in compiling all of that data and developing McDaniel as a suspect,” Keevern added.

McDaniel was arraigned at North Greenbush Town Court and was released on the condition that he report to probation. He is due back in that court in late May.

Any property found in North Greenbush can be turned over to the North Greenbush Police for safekeeping and all reasonable attempts will be made to return it to the rightful owner.
