Five fun facts about Screaming Orphans

- Staff report

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. » The all-female Irish band Screaming Orphans is coming back to the Capital Region this weekend for a good old-fashioned Irish Hooley.

A fan favorite at Irish festivals across the U.S. and Canada, Screaming Orphans has a widely regarded collection of 12 albums. The group’s latest CD, “Taproom,” landed at number one on the iTunes World Music charts and was in the Top 10 on the Billboard World Music chart.

The women have recorded with Peter Gabriel, performed with Joni Mitchell on a Chieftains album, backed Sinead O’Connor on a tour, and were named Best Rock Band at the Irish Music Awards.

This beloved act is set to perform at the Irish Hooley at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 in the historic Universal Preservation Hall at 25 Washington St. in Saratoga Springs. Tickets are $25 each, or $5 for children age 17 and younger, and can be purchased online at universalpreservationhall.org or by calling the box office at (518) 346-6204.

Ahead of the local show, Screaming Orphans shared a few fun facts about its members:

1. Screaming Orphans are the four Diver sisters — Joan, Angela, Gráinne and Marie Thérèse — with the good fortune to have been raised in the magic of Bundoran in County Donegal, Ireland.

2. Joan has never owned a wallet (and never wants

to). She keeps her money in a paper envelope. When it gets grubby she gets herself a new clean one.

3. Marie Therese prefers instant coffee (spoon out of a jar) to any of the fancy ones.

4. Angela is the slowest driver known to mankind. The reason for this is that she lives in fear of hitting an animal (this includes bugs)

so we crawl along the road just in case an animal or bug crosses her path. Result … we never let her drive.

5. Gráinne can’t swim but it never stopped her surfing. Only through the watchful eyes of her good friends (who knew how to swim) is she alive today. She really should learn how to swim.
